IPL Results 2017: Latest Scores, Points Table, Schedule After April 20 Fixtures

Mumbai Indians moved to the summit of the 2017 Indian Premier League Twenty20 standings on Thursday after beating Kings XI Punjab by eight wickets to book their fifth win of the campaign.

The visiting side sealed their fourth victory in succession with a little less than five overs to spare as Jos Buttler and Nitish Rana helped complete a rampaging chase with run totals of 77 and an unbeaten 62, respectively.

Hashim Amla notched his first century of the T20 term and stormed Kings XI to a total of 198 for four at the end of their innings, but his heroics weren't enough to prevent the Indians from storming back to keep their run going.

Kings XI Punjab vs. Mumbai Indians

Mumbai, 199 for two (Buttler 77, Rana 62*) beat Kings XI, 198 for four (Amla 102, Maxwell 40), by eight wickets.

It requires a special type of talent who can steal the limelight from a player who has just knocked for a century against his side, but Mumbai talisman Buttler proved his IPL credentials doing just that on Thursday.

The Englishman collected four boundaries and five sixes en route to an impressive 77 after opening alongside Parthiv Patel, per ESPN Cricinfo, and media broadcaster Piers Morgan applauded his compatriot's efforts in the aftermath:

Batting openers Patel and Buttler also proved to be the only Indians players Kings XI could bowl out on Wednesday, too, with Glenn Maxwell catching both at the 81 and 166-run marks, respectively.

By then, Mumbai had enough momentum to see the result out through their lower order, and Buttler detailed it was his lack of aggression in chasing the score that led to a big score, per Cricbuzz:

Today chasing that kind of total was good for me to go on from ball one and not think too much about it with the field in. I almost tried too hard in the last few games to score the runs because I felt in good touch putting too much of an expectation on myself. While a big score you can just go for your shots which is what happened today. I just tried to stay still and the shots came off.

No-one could rub the gloss off what was a terrific outing for Amla as well, however, after the 34-year-old recorded his maiden century in the Indian Premier League, having made his debut for Kings XI in 2016.

Buttler's 77 was his first 50 in his last 20 IPL matches, according to Cricbuzz, not to mention being his highest score in T20 cricket, besting the previous high of 73 he managed on international duty.

Mumbai are starting to develop the kind of pace that could fire them into a play-off place come the middle of next month, and Buttler's side next play host to Delhi Daredevils on Saturday in what's sure to prove another test of his talents.
