Edoardo Molinari Wins Playoff Battle with Paul Dunne at Trophee Hassan II 2017

Edoardo Molinari completed an epic comeback during Sunday's 2017 Trophee Hassan II action, carding a round of five-under golf to force a playoff with overnight leader Paul Dunne.

The Italian only needed one extra hole to grab the win, his first on the European Tour since 2010. Paul Waring finished third after an impressive comeback of his own.

According to Golf & Course, the prize money for this year's Trophee Hassan II tournament was €2.5 million, with the winner picking up a cool €250,000 and 250,000 points for the Race to Dubai.

Dunne entered the final day of competition with a two-shot lead over Renato Paratore, but his round didn't get off to a great start. The Irishman bogeyed the very first hole but bounced back nicely with his approach on the second, per the European Tour's official Twitter account:

During the first few holes, things appeared to be running smoothly for Dunn, with Paratore, Gregory Havret and Dylan Frittelli all struggling. He would add another birdie and bogey on the front nine, maintaining his lead at the top of the leaderboard.

But from the background, both Waring and Molinari made huge moves. The former opened up the back nine with two birdies on the first three holes, good enough to tie Dunn at the top, per the European Tour:

While his run was impressive, it paled in comparison to what Molinari did on the back nine. The Italian, who had only managed par on the front nine, exploded with eagles on the 12th and 18th holes.

The European Tour's official Twitter account couldn't believe it:

With Dunne bogeying the 16th and coming within inches of a birdie putt on the 17th, the final hole would prove decisive. Waring fell short and immediately congratulated Molinari on his fine round after he finished while Dunne gave himself a chance at birdie with a solid approach. He kept his nerve to sink the putt and force a playoff.

The two moved back to the 18th, where Molinari had the better tee shot, with Dunne's ball landing well wide. The Italian promptly parked his ball in a bunker, while his opponent found himself in the rough after two shots.

Neither made the green after three shots, and Dunne missed his par putt to hand the advantage to Molinari from two feet out. While it wasn't a hard putt, he made sure to sink it for his first European Tour win in over six years.
