Matt Harvey Says His 'Arm Was Not Working at All,' Will See Doctor About Injury

Tim DanielsJun 15, 2017

New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey exited Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs early after experiencing a tired arm.

According to ESPN.com, Harvey said he was "fatigued" and "tired" and expressed concern about his velocity: "It's pretty frustrating. My arm was not working at all. I looked up a few times and saw 86, 87 on the fastball. ... The last time I threw 87 on a fastball was freshman year of high school."

Mets manager Terry Collins said Harvey would be examined Thursday: "We're going to have Matt looked at just as a precaution. He'll go see the doctor. Again, like anything else, when someone is just abnormal. It would be one thing if Matt was 91-92 [miles per hour], but it's another thing when he's 89."

Harvey was lifted after four innings Wednesday, having allowed four hits and four earned runs.

So far this season, Harvey has struggled to a 4-3 record with a 5.25 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.

Harvey has been one of the best starters in MLB when healthy. His best statistical season came in 2013, when he posted a microscopic 2.27 ERA and 0.93 WHIP while striking out 191 batters in 178.1 innings across 26 starts.

Injuries have derailed the 28-year-old right-hander's career a couple times since, however. He missed the entire 2014 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. His 2016 campaign came to a premature end because of shoulder trouble.

He missed a start earlier this season after receiving a three-day suspension from the organization after a reported "violation of club rules."

The silver lining for New York if he's forced to miss more time is its rotation depth. Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler and Steven Matz lead the way, although ace Noah Syndergaard remains on the DL.

Ultimately, Harvey continues to flash his top-end ability when he's on the mound. The amount of time he's spent dealing with injuries over the past four years raises concerns about exactly how much the Mets can count on him moving forward, though.
