EPL Table: 2017 Premier League Standings After Wednesday's Week 31 Matches

James DudkoApr 5, 2017

Tottenham Hotspur scored three goals in six minutes to come from behind and beat Swansea City 3-1 at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday and keep their Premier League title hopes alive.

Spurs' comeback leaves them seven points adrift of Chelsea after the leaders beat Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. The Citizens will now likely have to confine themselves to fighting for a top-four finish as they trail the Blues by 14 points.

Liverpool saw their hopes of chasing down Spurs take a hit when Bournemouth battled back to earn a 2-2 draw at Anfield. The struggles of Liverpool and City will buoy Arsenal, who went back to fifth after a first league win since February, courtesy of beating West Ham United 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Recap

Spurs were trailing at the Liberty until two minutes from the end. It was then Dele Alli popped up with a hugely significant finish to equalise Wayne Routledge's 11th-minute opener for the Swans.

The precocious talent has become the most prolific young midfielder at the top end of the European game, per Squawka Football:

Tottenham took the lead in the 91st minute when Heung-Min Son found the back of the net. BBC Match of the Day presenter and former Spurs striker Gary Lineker noted how his old club is keeping the title race alive:

Spurs wrapped up the points when Christian Eriksen netted in the 94th minute. The Danish playmaker has been a regular menace against Swansea, according to OptaJoe:

Overall, Tottenham deserve ample credit for continuing to push Chelsea. In fact, Spurs are due immense praise for the way they have coped without star striker Harry Kane.

Tottenham have now won their last three league games sans Kane, proof this team deserve to be taken seriously as title contenders.

Yet for all Spurs' endeavour, the big prize is still Chelsea's to lose after the Blues all but ended City's bid. Eden Hazard scored twice, with his second coming after he saw a penalty saved by Willy Caballero.

Hazard's second cancelled out Sergio Aguero's opener. It also condemned Citizens manager Pep Guardiola to some unwanted firsts.

Guardiola has now got used to losing league games, per OptaJoe:

Two of those defeats have come against Chelsea. Losing to the same opponent was something Guardiola never had to get used to previously:

Ultimately, Guardiola's bid to be an instant success in Manchester has been undermined by a porous defence and a squad too lopsided toward the attack.

Liverpool failed to take full advantage of City's slip after making too many errors against Bournemouth. The Cherries were gifted an early lead when former Arsenal striker Benik Afobe pounced on a weak backpass from Georginio Wijnadlum.

Liverpool needed an answer and got it from a familiar source when Philippe Coutinho set a record for a Brazilian in England's top flight, according to Sky Sports Statto:

The Reds were in front when Wijnaldum dropped an inch-perfect cross onto the head of striker Divock Origi a minute before the hour mark. Yet Bournemouth earned a point when Josh King finished on the turn three minutes from time.

Andy Kelly of the Liverpool Echo bemoaned the home side's slack defending:

The draw is doubly costly after Arsenal won to cut the gap on third to six points, with the Gunners having played two games less. Arsenal beat the Hammers after Mesut Ozil broke the deadlock after half-time.

The goal marked a first for Ozil in his Gunners career:

It was two when Ozil teed up Theo Walcott to score. His goal proved a landmark one for Arsenal this season:

Olivier Giroud came off the bench to add gloss to the scoreline with seven minutes left. The Gunners have struggled mightily in 2017, but four points from two league games appear to have stopped the rot, no doubt much to the relief of under-fire manager Arsene Wenger.

One manager who has earned plaudits is Hull's Marco Silva. He has dragged the Tigers out of the bottom three after a 4-2 win over second-bottom Middlesbrough.

The key to Silva's success has been establishing strong form at home:

Hull have eased some of the pressure on themselves, but Boro and Swansea remain in the thick of the trouble. West Ham are in danger of joining them, while Crystal Palace were given a reminder of their own danger after losing 3-1 in Southampton.

Yet it's at the top where things are hotting up. Spurs aren't giving up on the title just yet, while north London rivals Arsenal are far from done in the race for the top four.
