Carmelo Anthony Says He Sees 'The Writing on the Wall' with Reduced Knicks Role
Carmelo Anthony's relationship with the New York Knicks has changed as the team evaluates its long-term plans. Following Wednesday's 105-88 loss to the Miami Heat, Anthony seemed content with his current role.
"I see the writing on the wall. I see what it is," Anthony said, per ESPN's Ian Begley. "I see what they're trying to do, and it's just me accepting that. That's what puts me at peace. Just knowing and understanding how things work. I'm at peace with that."
Anthony missed consecutive games March 23 and 25 with a sore left knee. His minutes per game have trended downward lately as well.
Despite a reduced role, the 10-time All-Star is taking it in stride:
"I don't think me going out there, trying to score 30 and 40 every night and playing that way, is going to help them out at this point. I think it's more about getting that experience and letting them go out there and play through that right now. It's challenging, but I think it's for the greater good for everybody on this team.
"
The Knicks weren't mathematically eliminated from the Eastern Conference playoff race until Wednesday, but it's been apparent this team wasn't going to make a serious run for months.
Anthony, 32, was the subject of trade rumors before February's deadline. His contract is guaranteed through next season at $26.2 million, with an early termination option for 2018-19 at $27.9 million.
In 71 games this season, he's averaged 22.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists for the 28-47 Knicks
