Arsenal vs. Manchester City: Arsene Wenger Talks Alexis Sanchez, More in Presser

Christopher SimpsonMar 30, 2017

Alexis Sanchez will not be headed to Chelsea, according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in his press conference ahead of the match with Manchester City. Wenger told reporters, "There is only one team in London," and he believes both Sanchez and Mesut Ozil want to remain at the club.

Wenger responded after the Chilean had fuelled speculation of a move to the Blues:

Per ESPN FC's Mattias Karen, he added he is interpreting Sanchez's comments "in a very positive way" and that "he is happy here."

According to Goal's Chris Wheatley and the Mirror's John Cross, Wenger revealed his belief that both Sanchez and Ozil are happy in north London and said Arsenal will no longer allow star players to join rival clubs:

Ozil has missed Arsenal's last two Premier League matches—3-1 defeats to Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion—but could be in line to play against Manchester City on Sunday after featuring for Germany in the international break.

Per The Mirror's Jack Rathborn, Wenger said: "He is in contention to start again. He played 20 minutes against Azerbaijan. He has worked very hard this week."

The Frenchman gave the latest on his other fitness concerns, per the Evening Standard's James Olley:

The manager is hoping for an improved showing against City after seeing his side lose six of their last nine matches in all competitions, with their only wins coming against Hull City, Lincoln City and Sutton United:

Per Rathborn, he added: "It's not only a period that matters, but for what is at stake for us, how do we respond to a mentally disappointing period? How can we focus and stick together now?"

Arsenal's poor run of results has left them in sixth place, six points behind Liverpool in fourth, and Wenger is well aware of the situation the Gunners find themselves in:

"

We have two games in hand. The games are coming thick and fast, our season will be decided by the next two months.

The ability and the strength we can show together to fight and come back in a convincing way. We had a deficit against West Brom. Our future will be decided by our mental qualities.

"

While Wenger answered "not today" when asked whether he would be clarifying his future at the club, he is anticipating activity in the transfer market in the summer to improve Arsenal's squad: "It is a very strong basis, but the team needs to be strengthened, of course."

Should the manager stay beyond the expiration of his contract this summer, he will need to recruit heavily and effectively in order to placate a large swathe of the Emirates Stadium faithful calling for him to leave.

Those protests will likely intensify further if Arsenal fail to get a positive result against Manchester City on Sunday, as defeat would put the Gunners in an even more difficult position as they look to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Beating City could alleviate some of the tension, but even victory would leave much still to be done before the season finishes.
