Ryan Dilbert's 10-Count: The New Era Must Reign at WWE WrestleMania 33

Ryan DilbertMar 29, 2017

1. The Future-Minded Show of Shows

WWE WrestleMania 33 can't fall into the same trap as last year's pay-per-view did—signaling to the audience that the past was better.

Too often at WrestleMania 32, WWE sought nostalgic moments over career-changing ones. Fans were left buzzing about The Rock and Steve Austin rather than younger stars who will be the backbone of the company for years to come.

The Rock showed up mid-event last year, waved a blowtorch around and flirted with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. He then bickered with The Wyatt Family before whipping Erick Rowan in mere seconds.

Austin, Shawn Michaels and Mick Foley made a cameo of their own. The three legends steamrolled The League of Nations; Stone Cold stunned Xavier Woods of The New Day.

The show was often about generating crowd pops by way of celebrating the past.

There was a distinct message of reverence for the Attitude Era. Will Pruitt of ProWrestling.net summed it up well when he tweeted last year:

That can't be the approach on Sunday's PPV.

Yes, Goldberg is headlining the show, but WrestleMania 33 has a multitude of chances to showcase fresher faces. Bray Wyatt can earn his first WrestleMania win, for one, retaining the WWE Championship against Randy Orton. WWE could emphatically announce The Eater of Worlds' arrival to the top tier in the process.

Seth Rollins is poised to finally exact his revenge on Triple H in an unsanctioned match.

The Game winning would be a mistake. Triple H's legacy is set; he doesn't need to add to his list of WrestleMania victims. The Architect, on the other hand, would come out of Orlando, Florida, flush with momentum if he conquered the future Hall of Famer.

AJ Styles should be who fans are talking about after his match with Shane McMahon, not the SmackDown commissioner.

WrestleMania 33 could crown the likes of Baron Corbin, Naomi, Enzo Amore and Sami Zayn. There are masterpiece matches to be had and moments to create.

Fans should leave The Show of Shows pumped about the future of the company, thrilled by the current generation of stars. That has to be the focus this time around.

2. Roman Reigns vs. Undertaker: By the Numbers

When Roman Reigns and Undertaker lock horns at WrestleMania in Orlando, they will do so at vastly different points in their career.

The Big Dog is 31; Undertaker just turned 52. Reigns is 3-1 at WrestleMania, per CageMatch.net; Undertaker is 23-1 at the event.

Reigns' WrestleMania debut was in 2013; The Deadman's first match at The Showcase of the Immortals happened back in 1991. Reigns was six years old at the time.

Reigns, though, has compiled plenty on his WrestleMania resume already. He has twice challenged for a world title at The Show of Shows, winning it once. Undertaker won the world championship three times at WWE's biggest event.

And Reigns has already faced five of Undertaker's WrestleMania opponents—Brock Lesnar, Big Show, Kane, Triple H, Orton.

3. Throwback Video of the Week: Rikidozan

Discussions of pro wrestling's all-time greats too often leave out Rikidozan, among Americans fans at least.

The man credited with popularizing the industry in Japan will soon get more recognition, though. Dave Meltzer reported on Figure Four Online that Rikidozan will be among the WWE Hall of Fame 2017 Legacy Award recipients.

For a glimpse of what Rikidozan could do in the ring, check out this clip from the '50s of him tangling with Lou Thesz, slapping the spit out of the iconic grappler:

Fans not familiar with the powerhouse's career and his impact on wrestling history should assign themselves some Rikidozan-centered homework.

4. The Start of a Black Takeover

Aleister Black's debut will steal the show at NXT TakeOver: Orlando.

Saturday's live special has some other promising matches on the card, but the Dutch bruiser is set to take the brand by storm. The hard-hitting Black has the presence, in-ring acumen and captivating fierceness to be a major player for NXT right away.

His first test will be getting by Andrade "Cien" Almas.

Considering how hot Almas has been of late and how motivated Black will be to impress out of the gate, that clash is sure to be excellent. The Anti-Hero is set to make a resounding statement in Florida.

5. Sami Zayn on his Saga with Kevin Owens

Sami Zayn's long war with Kevin Owens stretches back to the days when they were novice wrestlers trying to learn the craft in Montreal.

When WWE returned to that city on March 24 for a live event, Zayn spilled his guts to KO in a powerful speech. Looking around at the Montreal crowd, the former NXT champion said, "For me, this was WrestleMania."

Hopefully, we won't actually have to settle for a house show in his hometown being his WrestleMania moment. A gutsy win in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal is the least WWE can offer him on Sunday.

6. Wrestling's Core

Cheeseburger of Ring of Honor offered an image of what pro wrestling is all about. The New Jersey native tweeted a shot of him using his opponent's hand to high-five a young fan:

When the wrestling community spends too much arguing about who should have won and what match deserves to be on the main PPV, not the pre-show, or calling each other "marks," this part of the medium is too often forgotten. Wrestling is supposed to be fun.

The diehards among us, myself included, take it far too seriously at times. In the end, it's supposed to be the art form that thrills the kid in us, that connects us to the larger-than-life figures in the ring.

7. Streaks in Their Infancy

As a reminder of just how staggering an achievement Undertaker's famous WrestleMania streak was, note the fact that only two Superstars will enter this year's event with an undefeated stretch of their own.

Baron Corbin and Charlotte Flair are both 1-0 after winning their WrestleMania debuts, as seen on WWE.com.

Charlotte Flair

Numerous wrestlers, from Neville to Alexa Bliss, will be entering that stage for the first time this year. So we should soon see a few more grapplers get to 1-0.

Still, that would leave them light-years away from Undertaker's mark. The Deadman's 21 consecutive wins look untouchable at this point.

8. When Multiple Foes Click at WrestleMania

A good number of the most memorable matches at WWE's biggest event have been battles between two warriors.

WrestleMania, though, has seen its share of quality multiple-wrestler matches, too. That's been especially true in the last two decades where Triple Threat matches have grown more common.

To see that kind of clash at its best, whet your appetite with these clips and highlight and then seek out the full bouts:

  • Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho: WrestleMania 2000
  • Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Benoit: WrestleMania XX
  • Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton vs. Rey Mysterio: WrestleMania 22
  • Randy Orton vs. Batista vs. Daniel Bryan: WrestleMania XXX
  • Charlotte Flair vs. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch: WrestleMania 32

The bar is set high for the latest crowded collision—the Fatal 4-Way match between Flair, Banks, Bayley and Nia Jax for the Raw women's title on Sunday's PPV. Last year, Flair, Banks and Lynch stole the show with a foot-on-the-gas performance.

This year's title match will boast the addition of Bayley's babyface charm and Jax's monstrous aura, but it will have one more moving part to incorporate.

9. WrestleMania's Ladder Match Tradition Lives On

The Grandest Stage of Them All will once again feature bent steel and breathtaking falls from a ladder's highest rungs.

WWE announced on Monday that the Raw Tag Team Championship match at WrestleMania—Cesaro and Sheamus vs. Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson—will be a ladder match.

That move transformed a blase bout into something far more appealing. And it will continue what has become a tradition for The Showcase of the Immortals.

Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon battled in a ladder match at WrestleMania X, showing the world how enthralling that kind of contest can be.

Since then, WrestleMania has often been home to those dangerous bouts. The event hosted three-team ladder matches in 2000 and 2001, six Money in the Bank matches and a ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship in each of the past two years. A good number of those were absolute classics.

The Club and its challengers have their work cut out in living up to all that history.

10. Gail Kim on the Women's Evolution

When discussing the rise of women's wrestling, there is a major part of the narrative WWE leaves out— Impact Wrestling's trailblazing.

When the topic of Stephanie McMahon's thoughts on the evolution of the women's division came up online, Gail Kim tweeted:

Kim saw the difference in how the companies presented its women firsthand. She floundered during her time with WWE as the company did next to nothing with her. As part of Impact Wrestling's Knockout division, though, she was a much higher priority, allowed to thrive in feuds with Awesome Kong and others.

WWE simply isn't going to admit that it lagged behind Impact Wrestling on anything.
