Jason Day Discusses Status for 2017 Masters, Mother's Cancer Prognosis
Jason Day left open the possibility he'd withdraw from the 2017 Masters as his mom undergoes treatment for lung cancer.
"Obviously, I'm still nervous because we're still waiting to see ... if it has spread or not," Day said Monday, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com). "From there, we have to kind of come up with a game plan whether to go chemo—a form of chemo radiation—or something else."
Day also said his plan is to head to the Augusta National Golf Club in preparation for the first major tournament of 2017. However, those plans may change: "So currently I'm scheduled to play Augusta ... but if things don't come back the way we want them, I don't know what's going to happen."
Day played six holes in the first round of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play last Wednesday before withdrawing. Shortly thereafter, he revealed is mother's cancer diagnosis and that she was due to have surgery Friday in Columbus, Ohio, per USA Today's Steve DiMeglio.
Last Friday, Day's manager, Bud Martin, said Dening Day underwent successful surgery and doctors were optimistic about her recovery process, according to GolfChannel.com's Rex Hoggard.
Day finished tied for 10th at last year's Masters. OddsShark lists him as a 16-1 favorite to win in 2017, which are tied for the fourth-best odds.
