WWE Raw Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from March 20

Erik BeastonMar 21, 2017

Two veterans of WrestleMania rolled into Brooklyn for Monday's Raw and emerged from the broadcast as the biggest winners of the night, having spectacularly sold their upcoming matches to the masses through extraordinary promo work.

Their contributions to Raw were necessary in that they helped the show feel like a bigger deal than it may have otherwise been.

It reminded fans of two of the marquee matches at the upcoming April 2 pay-per-view extravaganza and allowed the longtime performers to do what they do: sell the emotion, frustration, anger, disappointment and conceitedness behind their programs to the masses in hope that fans will tune in, subscribe to the WWE Network or buy the pay-per-view through more conventional means.

While those masters of the mat may have been the night's biggest winners, the show was not without its losers.

Those two babyfaces were mishandled and now face uphill climbs in re-establishing credibility with the audience.

With mere days until WrestleMania takes over Orlando, relive the March 20 episode of Raw and the Superstars who made the greatest impression...for better and worse.

Winner: Chris Jericho

1 of 4

Chris Jericho reminded the world of his ability to sell a match to the masses Monday night, delivering a promo that stayed true to his current on-screen persona but with just enough personal edge to maintain the intensity both he and Kevin Owens have created for it.

Jumping into the way-back machine, Jericho accused Owens of "markin' out," and said he was just a fan. He exposed Owens as being scared upon his arrival in WWE and admitted they were never best friends.

No, their relationship was between fan and idol.

There was Jericho's trademark humor but also a tinge of condescension to his promo, as if he was talking down to Owens because he realized presenting him in that light would infuriate the champion and let his emotions get the best of him.

It worked.

Jericho endured a big Popup Powerbomb from an enraged Owens. While the attack certainly did not feel good, the look on Owens' face suggests Jericho's methods worked.

Any time someone can introduce a bit of reality into a story like Jericho did Monday night, the show benefits. It lets fans know that nothing is off limits and that the issues between the combatants are deeper than we could have imagined.

It makes for compelling television and Jericho's presentation Monday night was just that.

Loser: Dana Brooke

2 of 4

One week after earning "winner" status for finally turning on Charlotte, Dana Brooke finds herself on the flip side after what had to be a disappointing Raw.

Brooke, on her first night as a single and independent babyface, unloaded on Charlotte with a flurry of offense that stunned the former women's champion. Then suddenly, and without warning, she ate a big boot from the second-generation competitor and was pinned cleanly in the center of the ring.

No, she was not beaten with Natural Selection or the Figure Eight.

Instead, a big boot. Yes, just a garden variety big boot.

The WWE Universe already was struggling to accept Brooke as an in-ring competitor. After all, she is not as seasoned as other female performers and thus, is not as fluid a worker. Without strong booking, she is exposed for her weaknesses.

It is detrimental for WWE Creative to utilize her in the manner it did Monday night. With only Sasha Banks and Bayley to represent the babyface side of the women's division, it needs some depth behind them. Brooke is a solid choice, but she must be built up for her to be truly successful in that role.

That, unfortunately, did not take place this week.

Winner: Triple H

3 of 4

There was a period of time when Triple H was accused of having overly long promos that missed the point or served only to put himself over, and rightfully so.

It became a painstaking venture to watch some of those promos during the mid-2000s, but as time has passed, he has consistently reminded the WWE Universe that he can deliver on the mic when it comes time to promote a match.

Monday night, he joined Michael Cole in the ring for a promo regarding Seth Rollins and any chance the two of them will tangle at WrestleMania.

Triple H vowed that Rollins would not compete at WrestleMania and that it was the fans' fault. He claimed things went sour for The Architect the moment he stopped listening to The Game and started listening to the people.

With no shot of Rollins competing, he offered him tickets to the April 2 event.

Just in case that is not good enough for him, though, he challenged Rollins to show up on next week's show and sign a hold harmless agreement that effectively says neither Triple H, nor wife Stephanie, nor WWE can be sued if he competes at WrestleMania and is obliterated.

It was a cocky, arrogant proposal on the part of Triple H and one that will likely backfire.

Feeling the pressure of building a match without one of the participants available, The Game came through in a big way and left fans wanting more of his feud with Rollins. That is exactly what he should be doing at this time of the year, with WrestleMania rapidly approaching.

Loser: Sami Zayn

4 of 4

Sami Zayn came to the aid of Mick Foley, protesting Stephanie McMahon's decision to fire the Raw general manager. He sparred with The Billion Dollar Princess for a while before finding himself booked in a match with Samoa Joe.

Did Zayn pay off his sudden high-profile position with a victory? Of course not.

No, WWE's resident underdog failed to pick up a win once again, this time losing clean to The Destroyer.

While it is nice to see an old-school underdog on WWE television, he must at some point pick up a win before his credibility with fans is shot. How many times, no matter how talented he is, can Zayn rush to the aid of someone before he ends up getting his own ass kicked?

We have seen him run in to make the save for Chris Jericho...only to have Jericho make the save for him. He is presented as such a nerd that buying into him as a legitimate contender will eventually be impossible.

You can only get fans' hopes up so many timesand then let them downbefore they stop caring.

That is the dangerous path WWE is taking with Zayn, though one it can veer off of before things get too bad.
