Chandler Parsons to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery on Knee
Memphis Grizzlies small forward Chandler Parsons is expected to miss the rest of the 2016-17 NBA season due to a partial tear of the medial meniscus in his left knee.
The Grizzlies announced Saturday that Parsons is set for surgery Monday.
Memphis' decision doesn't come as a surprise after the swingman missed four consecutive games because of the knee. Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal reported last week that shutting him down was a possibility.
The surgery will bring Parsons' underwhelming first season with the Grizz to its conclusion. He ended up averaging 6.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists while setting career-low totals in both games played (34) and minutes per game (19.9).
His frustration was obvious following a two-point effort against the Houston Rockets on March 4, per Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com.
"I suck right now," Parsons said. "There's no sugarcoating it. It is what it is. I'm just going to continue to work, continue to grind."
It's also the third straight year his season came to an early end due to knee problems. The previous two instances dealt with issues to his right knee while with the Dallas Mavericks.
Parsons developed into a valuable contributor during his time with the Houston Rockets. He checked in at 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists during his final season with the franchise in 2013-14.
His numbers have steadily declined since, however, and the consistent knee injuries raise concerns about his future.
That's problematic for Memphis after signing the forward to a monster deal last offseason. He's under contract for three more years with a minimum cap hit of over $23 million that eventually reaches $25.1 million, per Spotrac.
The Grizzlies, who currently sit seventh in the Western Conference, didn't provide a timetable for Parsons' return. About seven months remain before the start of the 2017-18 season.
