LaVar Ball Says Son Lonzo Should Be No. 1 Pick in NBA Draft over Markelle Fultz
Having already compared his son Lonzo to two-time reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry, LaVar Ball found a new target: Washington Huskies star Markelle Fultz.
In an interview that TMZ Sports posted Saturday, Ball argued Lonzo should be selected ahead of Fultz in the 2017 NBA draft: "If you got a kid that makes everybody better, you mean to tell me you wouldn't take him over a guy that's averaging 40 points but the team's losing?" he said. "If you wanna winner, you pick my boy."
In terms of team success, Lonzo Ball has a clear advantage over Fultz.
The UCLA Bruins finished the regular season and Pac-12 tournament with a 29-4 record and beat the Kent State Golden Flashes in the first round of the NCAA tourney. Washington, on the other hand, posted a 9-22 record that resulted in head coach Lorenzo Romar's firing.
Fultz, however, was a much better scorer than Ball:
| Fultz | 23.2 | .476 | .413 | 5.7 | 5.9 | 1.6 |
| Ball | 14.6 | .551 | .414 | 6.1 | 7.6 | 1.9 |
In his most recent NBA mock draft, Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman had Fultz going No. 1 overall to the Boston Celtics, while Ball went second to the Los Angeles Lakers.
During an interview Thursday on Waddle & Silvy on ESPN 1000 in Chicago, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr questioned whether LaVar's constant trash talk will be counterproductive for his son.
Should Lonzo lead UCLA on a deep run in the NCAA tournament, NBA executives may have little choice but to put him atop their draft boards this summer.
