Dontari Poe to Visit with Atlanta Falcons

Joseph ZuckerMar 13, 2017

The Atlanta Falcons plan to bring free-agent defensive tackle Dontari Poe in for a visit within the next 24 hours, Kelsey Conway of the team's official website reported Monday.

He will have dinner with head coach Dan Quinn and members of the Falcons brass, per ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Poe finished with 27 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016.

Signing the 26-year-old won't be easy for Atlanta. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported a number of teams are keeping tabs on him:

In an interview with John Fricke and Hugh Douglass on 92.9 The Game in Atlanta (h/t the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter), Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff discussed the possibility of Poe visiting the team.

"[We want to] have [him] around our coaches to see how he fits—see what his expectations are and to be very clear about what our expectations are," Dimitroff said. "He's obviously had some very good seasons in the past. I think we believe that he still has the ability to contribute."

Poe is one of the top free agents who have yet to find a home, which will only increase the bidding war for his services.

He's coming off a somewhat underwhelming 2016 campaign, though. Pro Football Focus graded him the 59th-best interior defender (55.8).

While he isn't single-handedly responsible, Poe undoubtedly had a role in the Chiefs finishing the year as one of the worst teams in the league against the run. Kansas City allowed 121.1 yards a game on the ground, 26th in the NFL. Football Outsiders also ranked the team 26th in run defense DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average) and 30th in adjusted line yards.

Should Poe rebound in 2017, he'd be a worthwhile investment for the Falcons, who had their own issues on the interior of the defensive line. Poe would be a nice upgrade over Jonathan Babineaux to play alongside Grady Jarrett.
