Scrub Life: UGA Football 2009
Alright, I've had enough. For the past two seasons all I read from Georgia fans on comment boards was negative accusations regarding the coaching staff. All I have done, as a die hard fan, is defend the coaches and look for promise in the program. I thought Georgia was going to prove to the world that they are a solid program and will reload as opposed to rebuild.
Those days for me are now officially over. I am now sick and tired of watching this dysfunctional team get tossed in every big game they play.
Georgia is now 3-3 (2-2), and do not have one convincing victory this season. This team has won with a total margin of 16 points.
They have lost with a total margin of 60 points. This "proud" Georgia defense is allowing over 400 yards a game. The running game is non existent.
But, I do not blame the players. The coaching is completely flawed.
Let us take a look at the defense first. When you talk about a good defense, most would express how a run-stuffing defense makes it harder to throw. In Georgia's case, teams seem to be going into games telling their running backs "Sorry, you might not get the ball a lot today, this secondary is terrible."
Tennessee came out firing downfield, with success. Every other team we have faced has done the same thing.
The problem is the scheme. We play this horrible zone defense where the defenders seem to be standing wherever an opponent is not.
This defense has not worked for the past two years, and for some reason Willie Martinez has not made an adjustment?
With no pass rush, which we have no had, a zone defense simply DOES NOT WORK.
Boykin, Miller, and Smith are all guys who are athletic enough to hold their own in a more physical man to man scheme. Instead, we have them sit in their little zones while receivers just run away from their "areas."
There was a moment today where, in a cover three, one of our corners covered air and let a receiver on a post get inside.
There was no other receiver in the area. In that situation, you need to clamp down and run with the receiver.
Instead of using our guy's talent and having them run with the other team and get physical, they stand back in their zones and hope for a miracle.
Brandon Boykin, who is starting to look like the best corner we have had in a while, has two interceptions so far this year. Want to know how he got those? Both plays were cover two, which means Boykin had the shallow corner and the safety had the behind area.
But, in both instances, Boykin dropped out of his shallow "zone" and retreated to the receiver, basically overriding the scheme.
That is how you make a zone defense work. Players still need to be aggressive. Something tells me these guys are so stuck on the fundamentals of their defense that they aren't just going out and playing ball.
All of our defenders are athletic, but they are never around the ball to make a play. Willie Martinez needs to adjust this defense already. It is completely embarrassing that he has not already done so.
Mike Bobo is proving to be just as bad, and has that same mindset as Martinez apparently.
Instead of hitting defenses in the mouth, Bobo seems to be a big fan of finesse and trick plays.
I'm tired of seeing stupid draw plays. I'm tired of us trying tricky screens. Also, why do we not have more run plays? Every time it's a toss.
You do not see a blocking scheme with that offensive line at all. Why is it that the offensive line is so incredible in pass protection, yet can't get a running back three yards upfield?
Flawed coaching much? Again, we have superior talent. Let's stop trying to trick these defenses and go at them for once.
That's what happens with A.J. Green. Defenses know he is getting the ball, but they still do not stop it. We do not have to trick the defense to get A.J. the ball, it just happens because he is superior talent.
We've got all of these great recruits, so why is it so simple with Green and so complicated everywhere else?
Why, in a crucial point in the game, did we bring Logan Gray in on a 2nd and 11 to run a gimmicky zone run?
When you make a quarterback change, and bring in Carlton Thomas, Tennessee is going to figure it out even before the play starts.
That is how I feel whenever Georgia's offense is on the field. I kind of know what they are doing, before the play starts.
This team is hopeless, because until both Martinez and Bobo make major changes in their schemes, this team is going to continue to run into brick walls and get gashed on defense.
There were two major changes in those same areas a few years ago- changes that mark the decline in both areas according to my book.
Richt stopped calling plays, and Van Gorder left.
Hmmmmmmm.
I will not criticize Richt as much. But when you are a coach that does not call plays, you are more of a figure than a major influential part of the team. But, Richt could maybe show some emotion once in a while.
As a matter of fact, I never see a Georgia coach getting after his player. There just seems like this ridiculous calm on that sideline that puts you to sleep.
Anyone notice that Georgia's "emotional spark" with Knowshon and the endzone dance came with an 11-2 season?
I cannot believe I'm about to use this term, but Georgia needs some swagger! Richt needs to come alive. These players need to come alive.
But most importantly, Bobo and Martinez need to open their eyes and realize they have to adjust. Coaching is a process (thank you Mike Smith), and you cannot just robotically go about your business.
That is what all three major Georgia coaches are doing week in and week out. Something has got to give.
Fans are tired of seeing us get smoked in big games. We had the 31-0 debacle against 'Bama, the 41-10 loss to Florida, the 45-42 loss to Tech, and now this 45-19 loss to Tennessee?
And mind you, those 19 points were an accident. Rambo had a pick on a play that should have been a 20 yard gain for Tennessee.
The special teams scored the other 9 points.
This team is miserable to watch. Every team seems to come in with more confidence, more energy, and in attack mode from the first snap.
Do you know the definition of insanity? Repeating the same thing and expecting different results.
To Mike Bobo and Willie Martinez: You are both insane!
It is now week eight in college football, and this mightily talented Georgia football team is yet to play a clean game.
And to make matters worse, it is pretty sad when online freelance writers and bloggers not only diagnose problems, but reinforce the need to address those problems, while the coaches seemingly disregard their flaws and hide in closets during the week.
My mind is blown to say the least. At least Georgia basketball is right around the corner.
