Darrelle Revis Officially Released by New York Jets

Adam WellsMar 9, 2017

In a move that's been anticipated for the past week, the New York Jets have officially released cornerback Darrelle Revis.

The Jets communications department announced Revis' release on Twitter.

Eric Allen of the Jets' official website reported Feb. 28 the team informed Revis he would be released when the new league year opened on Mar. 9.

Revis posted a goodbye message to Jets fans on Twitter that same day:

Revis is currently embroiled in a legal situation from when he was charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault, one felony count each of robbery and conspiracy, and a misdemeanor count of terroristic threats stemming from an alleged incident last month in Pittsburgh, per ESPN's Rich Cimini

The 31-year-old Revis struggled on the field in 2016 for the Jets. Ryan Smith of Pro Football Focus ranked him as the second-biggest disappointment of the season, behind only Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews.

"Before 2016, the highest passer rating Darrelle Revis allowed in primary coverage throughout his career was 87.5 (his rookie year)," Smith wrote. "This past season, he allowed a 104.2 rating and a career-high 66.7 completion rate, along with 664 yards."

In his prime, Revis was one of the most feared defensive backs in the NFL. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 and was named to four All-Pro teams (2009-11, 2014).

Until Revis' legal matters are settled, it's hard to say what kind of future he might have in the NFL. He's at an age where he could be a depth cornerback for a team in need of help at the position, but the days of "Revis Island" are over.
