WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from March 7
The start of this week's 205 Live was delayed because Randy Orton and AJ Styles took so long leaving the ringside area following their match on SmackDown.
You could actually see the ring crew putting new tape on the ropes and a new mat in the ring as Orton was shown leaving.
The cruiserweight division has picked up quite a bit in recent weeks, and it took another step forward when Austin Aries inserted himself into the title picture on Raw.
Neville and Jack Gallagher had a great match at Fastlane, but the money feud is going to be Aries and Neville moving forward.
Let's take a look at what happened on this week's episode of 205 Live.
A Double Is Finally Ready for Action
1 of 4Austin Aries opened the show with a special interview. His guest was none other than himself. He actually played both interviewer and subject, which made for a few funny moments.
Whenever he was asking questions, he had his glasses on. When he was answering them, he removed his shades, which gave his statements a little more weight.
Neville didn't wait long to come out and confront the man who attacked him on Raw. He told Aries he should stick to telling his stupid jokes on commentary, which Aries reminded him he could do without being a commentator.
The King of the Cruiserweights told Aries he has made some enemies backstage with all his insults while calling matches, which didn't seem to phase A Double whatsoever.
This was a decent segment for both men. Aries is great as a heel, but the fans treated him like a babyface in this exchange.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- Aries used prison-yard mentality to explain his actions. Basically, he found the biggest guy and punched him in the face.
- Aries actually had a banana in his pocket again. He must need to regulate his potassium, or he just likes a good joke.
- Neville and Aries could easily steal the show at WrestleMania if they are given enough time.
Noam Dar and Ariya Daivari vs. Jack Gallagher and Rich Swann
2 of 4
Before the match, Rich Swann was shown trying to teach Gallagher a few hip-hop moves when Noam Dar came in and questioned them about the flowers Alicia Fox received last week.
Dar teamed up with Ariya Daivari to battle Swann and Gallagher in the first match of the night. Swann got in a few quick maneuvers before Daivari turned the tables and brought in Dar.
These four men are all talented, but this was about as average as a tag match can get. One babyface took a lot of damage until the fresh partner came in and cleaned house.
While the routine was predictable, it was still fun to watch Swann and Gentleman Jack do their thing. The fight was over after Swann hit a beautiful Phoenix Splash on Dar to pick up the win.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- It's starting to feel like Daivari is never going to be given a real push in this division.
- The guy wearing a Naomi shirt who was dancing his butt off during Swann's entrance was hilarious. It's always nice to see fans getting into the show.
- After the match, another delivery man came out with some chocolates for Foxy. Dar obviously didn't send the package, but he pretended he did to stay on her good side.
- Whenever I see Dar and Foxy, it makes me think of Rick Moranis and Joan Cusack from My Blue Heaven for some reason. Great movie, by the way.
A Bryan Kendrick vs. Akira Tozawa
3 of 4The Brian Kendrick wasn't going to give Akira Tozawa the fight he wanted, but he did bring out A Bryan Kendrick for him to face, noting how the only difference between them was the spelling of their first name.
The imposter came out wearing a pair of the real Kendrick's tights, but that is where the similarities between the two ended.
Tozawa was not amused, so he took out his frustrations on the jobber with a series of stiff strikes. The poor excuse for a doppelganger got in one good punch before Tozawa hit the best German suplex in the business to finish him off.
The real Kendrick decided he had seen enough and left through the crowd. It's hard to grade a segment like this because the match was never meant to be anything special, but it did advance a storyline, so it had some value.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- Waiting a few months to bring Tozawa into the fold was a good idea. He was able to have a special debut instead of being part of a large group to start the division. He is already one of the most over babyfaces on the roster.
- It's probably never going to happen, but it would be cool to see Paul London brought back to feud with Kendrick.
- When Tozawa and Kendrick finally have a singles match, they are going to tear each other apart.
Austin Aries vs. Tony Nese
4 of 4To give us a taste of what Neville vs. Aries will look like, WWE booked A Double to face Tony Nese in his first match since going down with an eye injury in October.
Nese is the perfect stand-in for Neville because they are both more muscular than the average cruiserweight while maintaining the ability to fly through the air as well as anyone else on the roster.
The arrogance of Aries was on full display in this one, and he even resorted to using a few heel tactics like a poke to the eyes, but the fans were in his corner from start to finish.
The Premier Athlete provided some great competition for the returning Aries, but he fell to the Roaring Elbow in the end.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Chris Jericho would be proud of Aries' ring jacket.
- Side note: I just remembered Aries was the voice of a character in WWE '12 in the Road to WrestleMania mode while he was still employed by TNA.
- Nobody expected Nese to walk away with a victory, but he always makes his opponents look good. Hopefully, he gets a real push after WrestleMania season is over.
- Nese lifting Aries off the mat with one arm for a powerbomb was incredible. Aries might be a cruiserweight, but he is still close to 200 pounds.
