Broncos Rumors: Danny Woodhead Reportedly Receiving Interest from Denver

Joseph ZuckerMar 7, 2017

Despite missing all but two games in 2016, free-agent running back Danny Woodhead will likely have a few options as he mulls over the next move in his NFL career.

Sporting News' Alex Marvez reported Tuesday the Denver Broncos are among those keeping tabs on the 32-year-old.

For the second time in three years, Woodhead ended the season on injured reserve. He suffered a torn ACL in the then-San Diego Chargers' Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In January, the San Diego Union-Tribune's Michael Gehlken reported Woodhead was six weeks ahead of his recovery schedule and shared a short clip of his rehabbing:

When healthy, Woodhead doesn't provide a ton of value on the ground. He's averaging 23.5 yards per game through his first eight years. He is, however, a dynamic pass-catcher out of the backfield.

In 2015, Woodhead finished with a career-high 80 catches for 755 yards and six touchdowns. Despite missing significant chunks of 2014 and 2016, he's tied for seventh among running backs in receptions (267) and fifth in receiving yards (2,498) between 2009 and 2016.

With Devontae Booker and C.J. Anderson both under contract for 2017, Woodhead's role in the Broncos offense would be limited next year, which makes sense given the questions around his durability. He'd bring a different dimension to the unit, since neither Anderson nor Booker has proved himself to be a comparable receiver.

The price to sign Woodhead will almost certainly be low. He's on the wrong side of 30 and coming off a major knee injury. As a result, the Broncos may have a lot of competition should they want to make a serious push at adding him to the team.
