Recap
The shoot-out remains a unique event on the snooker calendar, and with ranking points on offer in 2017, the players took it a little more serious than they have in the past.
Murphy was one of the standout performers of the afternoon session, winning a close match against Zhang Anda. Both men spent plenty of time at the table―a rarity in the shoot-out―but it was the more experienced player who pulled through in the end.
As shared by World Snooker, Murphy was on point with his long potting:
The Magician has long been one of the most vocal proponents of the shoot-out format, and he took to Twitter on Friday to reaffirm his love of the tournament:
Doherty also booked his spot in the second round, narrowly surviving a comeback from Aditya Mehta. The Indian had battled his way to within 10 points when he missed a blue, and Doherty took care of business the rest of the way.
Last year's finalist Luca Brecel played out another close and exciting match, beating Lee Walker 50-44 with some excellent shot-making. The Belgian seems to relish the shoot-out format, and a good run in Watford could boost his ranking tremendously.

Liang Wenbo also advanced, landing a superb 79 break to finish with a great score of 109 to just the single point for Matthew Stevens.
Saengkham caused one of the biggest shocks of the day, knocking out 2013 champion Gould. The 24-year-old played with seemingly no pressure on his shoulders, converting some high-difficulty shots he likely wouldn't have taken on in a standard match.
And there was one more major shock to come, as Akbar completed a comeback to beat 2015 world champion Bingham. The veteran had a chance with the final ball, attempting a trick-shot on pink that would have given him the win had it gone in.
The second round kicked off during the evening session, and Murphy continued his fine play, easily taking care of John Ashtley. Doherty was barely troubled in his win over Zhao Xintong, courtesy of some patient break-building and smart safety play at the right times.

Jimmy Robertson enjoyed one of the most dominant outings of the session, beating Rhys Clark 72-1, and Mark King took advantage of a poor miss from Andrew Higginson to book his spot in the next round.
The fans were anxious to see legendary player Jimmy White in action, and he didn't disappoint, playing out the tightest match of the evening against Chen Zhe.
The 23-year-old appeared to have the match won when he had a relatively easy shot on the pink with under a minute left to play, but a miss set up a very tense finale in which a tactical blunder nearly cost White the win.
World Snooker shared the thrilling finish to the match:
Anthony McGill cleverly played the clock in his win over Jamie Curtis-Barrett, and Cao Yupeng caused a minor shock with his win over compatriot Wenbo.
