Nebraska WR Coach Keith Williams Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail for 3rd DUI

Tyler ConwayFeb 22, 2017

Nebraska receivers coach Keith Williams was sentenced to 30 days in jail Wednesday after pleading no contest to his third DUI offense.

According to an Associated Press report, Williams will serve three years' probation and pay a $1,000 fine. He will also have his license suspended for five years but can apply for an interlock device after 45 days. Interlock devices ensure a driver has no alcohol in their system before starting a vehicle.

Williams was pulled over in August after rear-ending an Uber driver's vehicle in Lincoln. His blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.15 percent, almost double Nebraska's legal limit of 0.08 percent. While Nebraska law could have resulted in a felony charge, Williams was instead cited for misdemeanor DUI and careless driving.

Williams had been convicted of driving under the influence in California in 2004 and 2009. He did not serve jail time for either of those crimes. Nebraska was aware of Williams' previous arrests when coach Mike Riley hired him in 2015.

"There are things about representing and there also is the bottom line: this is dangerous, dangerous stuff," Riley said last August, per the AP. "People get killed, kill others, kill themselves. That's all bad. We'll have an assessment, evaluation of it, and then you talk about things like intervention, education, and then there'll be consequences which I'm not ready to talk about right now."

Williams was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season.
