Minor League Hockey Team Hangs Jersey Upside Down in Botched Retirement Ceremony

Andrew GouldFeb 21, 2017

Many athletes dream of watching his or her jersey ascend into the rafters. For minor league hockey player Colin Chaulk, the moment didn't go according to plan.

The Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL retired his No. 91 Saturday night. To everyone's shock, they uncovered an upside-down banner.

Making matters worse, they had no time to pause the ceremony and fix the mistake, so they hoisted it up anyway. Let's hope Chaulk is a big Stranger Things fan.

General manager David Franke did not find humor in the blunder.

"This is the most embarrassing thing I've ever been a part of in 27 years with the club," Franke told News-Sentinel.com's Blake Sebring. "I feel bad for Colin and his family and his friends. It's uncalled for."

According to Sebring, Memorial Coliseum executive vice president and general manager Randy Brown took full responsibility for the error:

"

On behalf of the Coliseum, we deeply regret the mistake that was made. It was an unfortunate mistake that the coliseum deeply apologizes to all Komets fans, the Franke family and Colin Chaulk and his family. We are embarrassed by the error and will do everything possible to ensure that it doesn't happen again moving forward.

"

At least it won't stay that way forever. Per Wane.com's Jessica Starbard, the banner "has since been fixed."

Chaulk is third in the team's all-time-leading scorer list.
