Julio Jones May Have Surgery on Injured Foot

Tyler ConwayMar 3, 2017

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones is set to undergo foot surgery March 6. He's expected to complete his recovery from the minor procedure before the start of training camp.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported the news. Rapoport also noted the Falcons continue to maintain an "open-ended" view of whether the star wideout will actually need the surgery, though.

On Wednesday, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official website passed along comments from Atlanta head coach Dan Quinn about the 28-year-old star's outlook.

"He's going to go back and visit the doctors in early March and they'll make a determination if he needs to get any procedures done on his foot," Quinn said. "He's off to a good start as far as his offseason goes."

He played through a turf toe injury during the Falcons' playoff run, which resulted in a trip to the Super Bowl, where the team lost to the New England Patriots.

Jones previously talked about the overall success of the passing game in 2016. Atlanta ranked third in the NFL at 295 yards per game through the air.

"Teams have tried this whole year; they've tried to take me away," he told reporters. "If they do, we have Taylor Gabriel, we've got Mohamed Sanu, we've got Justin Hardy, Eric Weems, Aldrick Robinson. I mean, who do you want? Then we have the two-headed monster in the backfield (in running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman). (Quarterback) Matt (Ryan) is doing a great job distributing the ball amongst all of us. Offensive line is doing a great job. It's really just pick your poison."

The game plan figures to remain pretty much the same looking toward 2017. So, if Jones does have the surgery next week, the Falcons will hope his rehab process goes smoothly. The offense isn't nearly as dangerous when he's on the sideline.
