Bob Redman of Scout.com initially provided news of the player's decision.
"It's close to home," Smith said, per Ryan Bartow of 247 Sports. "It's family-oriented. And it's great education-wise."
Smith is a top recruit out of Florida, considered the No. 16 safety in the country by Scout.com. He is also the No. 169 player overall in the 2018 class.
The talented player has outstanding size for the position at 6'3" and 190 pounds. He could add some strength to his frame, although this shouldn't be a problem once he spends some time at the next level. This will help him remain a hard hitter who helps make plays against the run.
Still, Smith's biggest impact will likely come in the passing game. He has strong instincts to find the ball and the playmaking ability to force turnovers with regularity.
"Most college coaches like my length...[the] way I get out of breaks," Smith said, per David Furones of the Sun-Sentinel. "I space the field more than other DBs, and they like the way I get up and high-point the ball."
This physical ability gives him tons of upside as a game-changer on defense.
While the Gators already have talented players on the defense, Smith has a chance to make an early impact and possibly earn some playing time as a true freshman.
"I'm going to bring speed and coverage," Smith said, per Bartow. "I'm a hard-hitting big safety."
If things go according to plan, he could eventually become a leader for this squad.
