The Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid agreed to a new contract extension Thursday.

The Chiefs issued a press release through their official website announcing Reid's extension, though terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Team CEO and chairman Clark Hunt issued this statement about Reid in the release:

“My family and I have been very pleased by the success the franchise has sustained over the last four seasons under Coach Reid. He has already established himself as one of the best coaches in the league, and he is well on his way to solidifying a place among the all-time greats. We are proud to have him leading our football team, and I look forward to working with him to bring a championship to Chiefs Kingdom."

Reid noted the progress of the franchise under his watch before adding there's still more work to be done:

“We've made quite a bit of progress over the last four seasons, but we are not done yet. We are going to continue to work towards our ultimate goal of winning championships. I've been blessed by the support of the community, our fans, the Hunt family and the entire Chiefs staff. I’m looking forward to the years ahead as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs."

Reid, 58, is 43-21 over his first four seasons in Kansas City. He's led the team to the playoffs three times, including an AFC West championship in 2016.

"Andy was somebody who over his years in Philadelphia had demonstrated that he can make the playoffs a lot," said Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt in January, per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. "This season has been so much fun up to this point."

Reid previously coached the Philadelphia Eagles for 14 seasons, winning the division six times and making the playoffs nine. Postseason success has always been a little fleeting for Reid teams; he has a 173-114 overall record with Philly and Kansas City, with the Chiefs' best effort being two appearances in the divisional round.

While Reid has taken criticism for early January exits and clock-management gaffes, the Chiefs are in a far better place since he's taken over the franchise. Kansas City had made the playoffs just three times in the previous 15 years before Reid's arrival.

Noted for his work with quarterbacks, Reid has also overseen the best years of Alex Smith's career. Smith has not had a quarterback rating below 89.1 in his four seasons playing under Reid, and he was named to his first Pro Bowl team in 2013.

"I have all the respect in the world for the guy," Reid told reporters of Smith. "The way he handles himself is just top of the line. We're so lucky to have him. He's very underappreciated, I think, outside of our walls."

With Reid now locked into Kansas City for the foreseeable future, he and the Chiefs will continue their quest to get over that playoff hump to match their consistent regular-season success.
