Manchester United Transfer News: Victor Lindelof Deal Close Amid Latest Rumours

Christopher SimpsonDec 19, 2016

Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira reportedly arrived in England on Monday to negotiate a deal with Manchester United over the transfer of centre-back Victor Lindelof to the Premier League club.

According to Bruno Andrade of Portuguese outlet O Jogo (h/t Metro's Sean Kearns), Benfica are reportedly hoping for a £37 million fee plus £5 million in add-ons.

The 22-year-old broke into the Portuguese club's first team in January and has gone on to have a sensational year, helping Benfica win the Primeira Liga title and establishing himself as a key player in the side.

His form also saw him make his debut for Sweden in March, and he has gone on to earn 11 caps for the national side.

Here's a look at what he could bring to Old Trafford:

As the video demonstrated, Lindelof is a physically and technically adept defender and a composed and reliable presence on the ball, and those qualities should see him fit in well in the Premier League.

Portuguese football writer Jan Hagen is an admirer of the Swede's work:

United have shipped 17 goals in as many Premier League games this season—bettered only by Chelsea's 11, Tottenham Hotspur's 12 and Southampton's 16—and have found some unexpected depth at centre-back in recent weeks thanks to the surprisingly resurgent form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.

Nevertheless, the last month or so aside, the pair have struggled to convince at United, and there's no telling if their form will continue long term.

Further, United will lose their best defender, Eric Bailly, to the Africa Cup of Nations in January, which could cause him to miss a month of games if the Ivory Coast progress deep into the competition.

Hesham Bilal-Hafiz of the Manchester Evening News has been impressed with Rojo and Jones, but he still believes Lindelof could be a good buy for United:

Indeed, if United were able to sign him they'd have two of the best young centre-backs in European football comprising their central defence, and the pair are only likely to get better as they get older and more experienced.

The Red Devils are hoping to become regular title challengers once again under manager Jose Mourinho after failing to do so at all under David Moyes or Louis van Gaal.

Much of their success under Sir Alex Ferguson came while United had strong partnerships at the back: Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister, then Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen in the 1990s, then Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Mourinho could do with a similar pairing if he's also to achieve long-term success at Old Trafford, and bringing in a strong player such as Lindelof to partner Bailly could be the start of that.
