Paige VanZant Comments on Potentially Fighting Ronda Rousey in TMZ Exclusive
Paige VanZant has expressed a willingness to fight Ronda Rousey, provided the former UFC bantamweight champion is willing to meet her at 125 pounds.
According to TMZ Sports, VanZant said she would only step into the Octagon with Rowdy if they met in the middle between the former's 115 pounds and the latter's 135:
She said: "Hey, if she wants to meet me at 125. [She'd have to cut down a little bit], and I'd have to go up. I would consider going up to 125, it's not that big of a weight gain for me."
When asked if she could beat Rousey, VanZant replied: "We'll see."
The 22-year-old holds a 7-2 record in UFC's strawweight division, having bounced back from her submission defeat to Rose Namajunas in December 2015 with a second-round knockout of Bec Rawlings in August.
VanZant will face Michelle Waterson at UFC on Fox 22 on Saturday as the co-headline event.
As for Rousey, she is yet to fight since her first-ever MMA defeat in November last year, in which she lost her bantamweight title to Holly Holm.
She will have the chance to regain it when she takes on Amanda Nunes on Dec. 30 at UFC 207:
If Rousey and VanZant did fight, it would likely be a fairly one-sided affair in Rousey's favour as the naturally heavier fighter.
Conor McGregor's defeat to Nate Diaz on his welterweight debut showed as much with the latter having the advantage of a larger frame; before winning their fight via submission, Diaz rocked Notorious with a single, powerful punch that changed the momentum of the fight.
Rowdy would also have a considerable edge thanks to her skills on the mat—she's formidable there in her own weight class, let alone against a smaller opponent.
Nevertheless, as two of the UFC's most popular exports, a clash between VanZant and Rousey may well be welcomed by spectators.
However, it seems somewhat unlikely the latter would be willing to shed 10 pounds for the bout.
