Carmelo Anthony, Phil Jackson Discuss Comments Executive Made About Knicks Star
Carmelo Anthony and Phil Jackson have been engaged in a contentious public feud since the New York Knicks president called out his star player for being a ball-stopper in a Dec. 6 interview with CBS Sports Network, but the two reportedly met Saturday to hash things out.
According to Newsday's Laura Albanese, Anthony and Jackson convened before the Knicks' practice in Los Angeles to quell some of the tension that has cropped up over the past five days.
"He's got to be careful with the choice of words that he uses," Anthony said, per Albanese. "He understands that; he knows that."
Anthony also told reporters he presented one big question to Jackson during their back-and-forth Saturday:
"That was my question: why? Regardless of what was the context of it — interview or conversation — just why? Regardless of what you said, why every time my name comes up? Regardless of what we're doing. He explained that. For me, it's been behind me since two days ago. At this point it ain't no need for me to keep harping on the same situation.
"
After Jackson discussed what he believes are Carmelo's tactical shortcomings, the 32-year-old took to Instagram and relayed a pair of posts that appeared to be direct shots at the 13-time NBA champion.
The first post pictured Anthony smiling with the following caption: "EGO is the only requirement to destroy any relationship. So, be a BIGGER person, skip the 'E' and let it 'GO' #StayMe7o." The second depicted Muhammad Ali with arrows being shot at him:
On Saturday, Anthony also told reporters he spoke to Kobe Bryant about Jackson's tendency to discuss his players' flaws in the media.
"He's [Jackson] going to talk," Bryant told Anthony, according to ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne. "Nobody can stop that. So try not to read into it too much."
For the time being, that's what Anthony appears to be ready to do.
"It's not really any amends to make," Anthony said, per Albanese. "From my standpoint, there's no problems; there's no issues. He said what he had to say. I won't go into details. He said his piece. I said my piece. Two men spoke."
