Roman Reigns as a Double Champion, NXT and More from the Dual Mailbag

Alfred KonuwaDec 1, 2016

After WWE confirmed a Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens matchup for WWE Roadblock: End of the Line, Reigns seems to be on the verge of becoming a double champion after an extended stay in the midcard. If Reigns' detractors hated him before, a win at Roadblock might lead to the peak of their animosity. So with Goldberg on top of the wrestling world, is now the time to pounce on a Reigns heel turn?

Double Reign-bow?

Very enticing. Roman Reigns will be relevant in WWE as a good guy or a bad guy. People react to him more aggressively than just about anybody else on the roster, no matter where he is on the card.

But with WWE prioritizing part-time stars and still unable to put its full trust behind any full-time athletes, why not experiment? Goldberg is the top star in WWE right now, and it isn't even close. You mean to tell me making Reigns a heel double champion who exploits his perceived privilege as "the guy" before going on to defeat Goldberg isn't going to start making a difference?

WWE needs some major overhauls with its main roster if it ever wants to stop this endless cycle of part-timer dependence. And if WWE ever does turn Reigns heel, hopefully Triple H has nothing to do with it.

Addition by Subtraction?

@APimentel24: "If Roman Reigns wins the Universal Championship vs. Kevin Owens, should Reigns drop the United States Championship? If not, to who?"

It depends. If WWE still wants to push Reigns as a babyface, it would be an uphill battle if he was a dual champion. Being a double champion is rare in WWE, and it's usually done to make heels even more obnoxious. Kurt Angle, Seth Rollins, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin and Triple H are all prime examples of heels who carried two championships simultaneously. Reigns' disposition as a silent assassin would make him a perfect fit as a dominant, unbeatable heel.

If Reigns remains babyface, I could see a scenario where he drops the United States Championship to Kevin Owens just to keep their feud even. Braun Strowman is also another strong choice, as he is ready to carry a championship and clean out the division before inevitably pursuing the WWE Universal Championship.

The NXT Top Babyface?

It feels like both Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura's days are numbered on the NXT roster. From here, NXT will need to function as more of a true developmental territory and actually cultivate promising young stars. Tag team wrestling seems to be on the verge of absorbing the main event scene in NXT. Teams like TM-61, The Revival, DIY and The Authors of Pain highlight a competitive division. Even Tino Sabbatelli and Riddick Moss are a budding heel tag team, but they seem destined to be more successful as heels in the singles division.

The babyface side, however, is a little trickier. Tye Dillinger's "10" phenomenon has made its way to the WWE audience, so perhaps NXT capitalizes on that and makes him a contender in the absence of Joe and Nakamura.

But with Bobby Roode, Eric Young and Austin Aries (if he returns to NXT rather than join the cruiserweight division full time), NXT has a strong crop of veteran heels who can carry a world championship before an up-and-coming babyface dethrones them.
