League Cup 2016: Wednesday's EFL Cup Scores, Results for Quarter-Final Ties

Manchester United and Southampton progressed to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup on Wednesday after beating West Ham United and Arsenal, respectively.

The Red Devils comprehensively outplayed the Hammers in a 4-1 win and were rewarded with a tie against Hull City in the last four, per BBC Sport.

Meanwhile, Southampton ended Arsenal's 19-game unbeaten streak in all competitions with a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium. They will face Liverpool in the next round, which will be played over two legs in the weeks of January 9 and 23.

The Gunners improved after the break but to no avail as they struggled to test Southampton's organised defence.

United made no mistake in their home quarter-final, however.

The Red Devils took the lead early on through Zlatan Ibrahimovic following some excellent work by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, per Sky Football:

Jose Mourinho's side—led by Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial and the resurgent Wayne Rooney—attacked with verve and vigour but failed to take their chances with Adrian enjoying an outstanding performance in the West Ham goal.

The visitors then equalised against the run of play as Ashley Fletcher capitalised on a rare error from David De Gea:

The match looked as though it was going in a similar direction to Sunday's stalemate with the Hammers, with United dominating but showing their profligacy in front of goal. However, Martial put them back in front minutes into the second period:

United sealed the win with further goals from Martial and Ibrahimovic, who tapped in excellent deliveries from Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera, respectively, though Adrian was still able to frustrate the Swede with a top-notch save.

The Red Devils should have more than enough about them to ensure their passage to the final when they face Hull over two legs, particularly if they play as they did on Wednesday.

As for Southampton, they face a difficult task against last season's finalists Liverpool, but if they can claim a positive result in the first leg, they'll have every chance of progressing.
