10 Awesome Sports Fans We're Thankful for This Year
Sports fans can be terrible (looking at you, Toronto Blue Jays beer can guy), but they can also be fully awesome. And the latter seems to happen far more often.
Really, does it get better than the dancing Golden State Warriors fan in the holiday sweater?
In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, here are 10 sports fans to be grateful for this year. They bring joy to other fans—either at the arena, on the interwebs or both—with their creativity, enthusiasm and delightful senses of humor.
Golden State Warriors Hero
Fans who really get into the dance cam are the best. While most folks simply sit back with their pretzels or take a bathroom break during timeouts, these fans take the time and effort to provide entertainment for those around them. This woman at a Golden State Warriors game against the Dallas Mavericks is a perfect example:
And she brought the killer holiday sweater to boot. Perfection.
Jake Guentzel's Family
Family fans are delightful. Take Jake Guentzel's, for instance. The Pittsburgh Penguins rookie scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game on his first NHL shot in November, and his family acted like it was the Miracle on Ice. It was joyful and awesome:
Kids Who Love Jimmy Butler
Kids seem to have a capacity for excitement that adults don't always share. Check out these youngsters, for example. They met Denver Broncos wide receiver Demryius Thomas at the Boys & Girls Clubs, which is cool enough, but they also got to FaceTime with Chicago Bulls star (and friend of Thomas) Jimmy Butler. It's hard not to feel happy watching this:
Cleveland Fans Who Can Laugh at Themselves
Thank goodness for people who can laugh at themselves, right? In that spirit, kudos to a few Cleveland Browns fans for making light of their team's winless campaign.
You know how folks always opine about a hypothetical matchup between the worst professional team against the best college team? Well:
In addition to calling out the Alabama Crimson Tide, Browns fans have also started the groundwork on an 0-16 parade (should the team actually finish the season without a dubya):
This Ultra-Polite Celtic Fan
Kid fans are fantastic—that point has been covered. But in case more proof is needed, check out this young Celtic supporter. In October, BBC News reported on Louis Kayes, a five-year-old fan who actually called the club to apologize in advance for missing a matchup against Motherwell.
Kayes' mother, Lisa, said, per BBC: "He wanted to let both of them know he'd missed it in case they were looking for him."
Later on, Kayes got to meet the team, so, all was forgiven:
Bill Murray
Is Bill Murray the best celebrity sports fan ever? Maybe, maybe not, but his journey through the Chicago Cubs World Series run was enough to make anyone share his elation:
The man shed tears of joy after the Cubs clinched the National League Championship Series. He gave an extra ticket to a perfect stranger at a World Series game in Cleveland. He interviewed team president Theo Epstein after the Cubs won it all. Bill Murray is the celebrity sports fan we all need.

This Ryder Cup Fan
Fans who insert themselves into the competition aren't always folks to be thankful for (ahem, this guy), but sometimes they are.
During a Ryder Cup practice in September, U.S. fan David Johnson was caught giving Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson a rough time. Stenson saw his heckling and raised him a putting challenge. Johnson sunk his putt and got a hug from Rory McIlroy to boot. Golf fans everywhere should aspire to this level of greatness:
Best Sports-Related Costume...Ever?
Buffalo Bills fans are something else. Most of the time, it's hard to tell if you should be grateful for their enthusiasm or slightly scared of it (NSFW-ish). And yet, it's hard not to appreciate this Halloween costume for its unbelievable creativity:
Creator of This Fantastic 'Up' Parody
Speaking of fans who can laugh at themselves, let's talk about this wildly creative Up-inspired video tweeted by a Texas A&M faithful:
Absolutely delightful. The Aggies started the season 6-0 and made it all the way to No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings but have since dropped three straight conference games.
Vancouver Fans Rescue Anthem Singer
Sports fans are capable of displaying incredible thoughtfulness and resilience. For example, folks at a Vancouver Canucks vs. St. Louis Blues game in October stepped in for the anthem singer when his microphone cut out. Fans completed "The Star-Spangled Banner" and sang "O Canada" like the bosses they are:
Thank you to all the awesome sports fans out there! You make the rest of us look good.
