Team SmackDown Triumphs in Chaotic Bout
The war between Team Raw and Team SmackDown Live lasted one hour and featured new chapters to every intertwined storyline within. It generated tremendous reaction across Twitter, which reacted with great fervor at several moments.
The inclusion of Shane McMahon drew great ire from some fans prior to the event, but the criticisms were rolling Sunday night. Bleacher Report's Jonathan Snowden got the ball rolling with a particularly nasty burn influenced by Beyond The Mat.
"Shane McMahon looks like he was trained by Roland Alexander in the APW warehouse.
— Jonathan Snowden (@JESnowden) November 21, 2016"
Respected writers David Bixenspan and Scott Fishman each took time to mention McMahon's innate ability to leap high in the air.
Cageside Seats appealed to the company itself.
Things turned scary mid-match, though, when McMahon set up his Van Terminator spot and was caught in midair by Roman Reigns, who drove him into the mat. The prodigal son appeared to be knocked out, unaware of where he was.
Snowden, doing some extraordinarily sarcastic, cynical and great work Sunday, chimed in.
"Shane McMahon left this Earth doing what he loves best: #wrestling poorly. #SurvivorSeries
— Jonathan Snowden (@JESnowden) November 21, 2016"
Podcast Over The Ropes tried to reason with Shane-O-Mac.
Kayfabe News attempted to make light of the moment, using another famous McMahon match to do so.
Insider Justin LaBar gave props to Randy Orton for handling the scary situation like a pro.
From there, the internet nearly exploded as The Shield gathered for a mini reunion of sorts. Enraged that he had been eliminated due to AJ Styles, Ambrose joined Reigns and Seth Rollins in putting the WWE world champion through a table.
Raw general manager Mick Foley encouraged Ambrose's actions.
WWE Creative Humor, another parody account, mockingly applauded the crowd for cheering Reigns for the first time all match.
Among the chaos, Bray Wyatt was able to secure his first pinfall victory on pay-per-view in what felt like an eternity, pinning Reigns following self-sacrifice from Orton to pick up the W.
B/R's Ryan Dilbert, Steven Rondina, Mike Chiari and Donald Wood each voiced their opinions on the finish.
Unimpressed with Raw's effort, Lana suggested that next time they should utilize her husband a bit better.
The match had the potential to be an extraordinary one, especially given the talent involved. What it was, instead, was an all-time great example of how to blend multiple stories together in one satisfying, spectacular package that probably deserves Match of the Year consideration, depending on your opinion of what makes wrestling great.
Goldberg Destroys Brock Lesnar
Goldberg squared off with Brock Lesnar in the main event of the night. The match lasted 1:27 and saw the babyface bowl over The Beast Incarnate for the shocking pinfall victory.
Twitter, as Twitter does, exploded with mostly negative rhetoric surrounding the decision to book that outcome.
"Imagine if WWE put over any of its good young wrestlers the way they have old man Bill Goldberg. #SurviorSeries
— Jonathan Snowden (@JESnowden) November 21, 2016"
Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline.com looked at the match from a father's perspective and the emotion that Goldberg must have felt being able to have that moment in front of his son.
ProWrestlingSheet.com's Ryan Satin brought some humor to the table.
There was a ton not to like about the finish. It did compromise all of the effort that went into establishing Lesnar as this unstoppable beast to benefit a 49-year-old man who probably could not have mustered enough energy to wrestle a longer match.
With that said, the humiliation he endured will help Lesnar rediscover his edge, something that has been missing with every victory.
