Grand Slam of Darts 2016: Saturday Scores, Results and Semi-Finals Schedule
Gary Anderson and James Wade booked their places in the 2016 Grand Slam of Darts semi-finals after producing impressive wins at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday.
Wade was up first, and he saw off Chris Dobey in an assured and professional display. Things were more tense for Anderson, though.
The world champion was pushed all the way by Raymond van Barneveld. Anderson eventually won thanks to a spectacular late scoring run.
He'll meet Wade in the semi-finals on Sunday, a day when Michael van Gerwen will also take on Peter Wright.
Sky Sports Darts confirmed the semi-final draw:
Here are the results from Saturday's quarter-finals:
| Player | Score | Player |
| James Wade | 16-5 | Chris Dobey |
| Gary Anderson | 16-13 | Raymond van Barneveld |
Recap
Wade was a model of consistency against his younger opponent. Dobey, just 26 years old, was never able to settle in because Wade found points whenever he needed them.
Living up to his nickname, the Machine made every shot the match demanded of him. The 33-year-old's consistency was best summed up by this run of checkouts, via 3 Dart Analyst:
Even when Dobey produced something special, the way he did with a maximum to begin the 19th leg, Wade had an answer. A 68 checkout put him two legs away from a place in the final four.
A double 10 in the next leg moved Wade a step closer. He soon wrapped things up in typically calm and ordered style, via PDC Darts:
Wade has the talent to beat anybody, but he's often been the sport's nearly man. Still, he'll present a tough challenge to Anderson in this sort of form.
Van Barneveld was down 4-1 and inching toward a 5-1 deficit before rallying in style to eventually move ahead 6-5. He first broke throw to make it 4-2 before holding well to cut the gap to just one.
Anderson was missing too many clutch throws to put his man away, and few players are as dangerous as Van Barneveld when he's allowed to stay in.
So it proved, as a double 16 made it 5-5 before a spectacular checkout finally put the Dutchman in front, per PDC Darts:
Anderson, though, didn't fold after seeing his commanding lead wiped out. Instead, the Flying Scotsman upped his game and made Van Barneveld pay for any miss.
First, the Dutchman missed on the bull to let Anderson even things at 7-7. Then he was wayward on double 16 to let Anderson finally reclaim the lead after hitting double 12.
Typically mercurial, Barney was still too inconsistent to hold off Anderson. Yet when he's in form, he's capable of true brilliance.
Van Barneveld proved the point with the best finish of the match to make it 10 each. He improbably found treble 19 before hitting the bull to take out 126, as PDC Darts shared:
Anderson couldn't go in front 13-12 despite hitting another 180. But he missed on two before Barney found double 16 for a crucial hold.
However, Anderson wasn't done. He hit a 12-darter to go ahead 14-13 and continued reeling off the maximums. A nine-darter was a worthy response from Barney, but the world champion hit tops to finally close out a classic.
Some of Anderson's scoring was outstanding, as his average proved, per Live Darts:
The Flying Scotsman saved his best darts for late, per 3 Dart Analyst:
Anderson will be too much for Wade if he can score like this on Sunday. Still, he'll hope to erase the inconsistency that let Van Barneveld push him so close.
