Floyd Mayweather Sr. Comments on Son Going 50-0, Conor McGregor
Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired from boxing on top with an unbeaten 49-0 record, but his father would evidently like to see him return to the ring with a chance to hit the half-century mark.
"I think it'll be good if he does 50 and 0,” Floyd Mayweather Sr. told Fight Hype, according to World Boxing News' Phil D Jay. "It takes him out the category that Rocky Marciano was in and it'll probably be another hundred some years before that happens again."
Furthermore, Mayweather Sr. did not sound pleased with UFC champion Conor McGregor after The Notorious proclaimed Money was scared of a fight in the Octagon.
"He wants a boxing match, he doesn't want a fight," McGregor said, per TMZ Sports. "I want $100 million cash to fight him under boxing rules ... he's afraid of a real fight."
Friday, Mayweather Sr. responded with some harsh words for the owner of a pair of UFC title straps.
"If he knows what's good for his ass, he better go somewhere and sit down, especially if he talking about messing with the Joy Boy (Roy Jones)," he said, per Jay. “If they want me to fight him, I'll fight him. I betcha I'll knock his ass out. I would put him to sleep and I'll put it on his ass for real."
While a crossover fight between Mayweather Jr. and McGregor still feels like a pipe dream, there have been rumblings of a potential rematch between Money and Manny Pacquiao after the Filipino fireball defeated Jessie Vargas by unanimous decision on Nov. 5 to capture the WBO welterweight title.
According to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, Top Rank Boxing promoter Bob Arum said he would "give it 75 percent" that the two will meet in a rematch of the May 2015 battle that saw Mayweather capture a victory via unanimous decision.
But for now, it's all a bit speculative.
The 39-year-old Mayweather Jr. told reporters he's enjoying retirement, per Jay, and he has yet to disclose any concrete plans regarding a potential comeback.
And based on the form Pacquiao flashed against Vargas, a rematch may not be the compelling theater fans are looking for a year after Mayweather handled his primary adversary with ease.
