Eduard Gutknecht Hospitalized: Updates on Boxer After Emergency Surgery
German boxer Eduard Gutknecht underwent surgery for an undisclosed ailment and remained hospitalized Saturday after a loss to George Groves on Friday night at SSE Arena in London.
The Press Association (via the Guardian) reported the 34-year-old veteran, who was born in Kazakhstan, took severe punishment in the lopsided defeat as he struggled to defend Groves' attacks in the late rounds. His condition began to worsen after the match and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
The British Boxing Board of Control stated Gutknecht is sedated after surgery and medical personnel will monitor him over the next few days, according to the Press Association.
Jeff Powell of the Daily Mail reported the boxer was "believed to have needed resuscitating" in the ambulance after collapsing in the locker room afterward.
Groves cancelled his post-match press conference after hearing the news of Gutknecht's condition.
He did post a message of support on social media, though:
Gutknecht owns a 30-5-1 record with 13 knockouts across a decade-long career. He's lost two of his last three fights, however. He lost to Juergen Braehmer in a bout for the WBA world light heavyweight title in March. Friday's loss came in a WBA international super middleweight title fight.
