Dig deep for this one, fight fans, and find out what questions are burning heading into this show.

Will Khalil Rountree Make Good on the Hype?

1 of 5

The Fight: Tyson Pedro vs. Khalil Rountree
The Real Fight: Khalil Rountree vs. Living Up to Expectations

The Stakes

Khalil Rountree entered The Ultimate Fighter season 23 as a white-hot prospect and seemed to be well on his way to making good on the expectations pinned on him. Unfortunately, an ugly 2-2 run on the show had left his standing in the sport unclear.

If he can't beat the unknown Tyson Pedro, though? Well, his standing would become pretty obvious from there.

The Question

Will Khalil Rountree make good on the hype?

Analysis

Rountree first popped up on the radar when legendary middleweight champion Anderson Silva labeled him as UFC champion material after just three pro fights. He seemed to be on the path toward realizing that potential, too, when he annihilated Justin Polendey at RFA 33 last December. Many pegged him as the early favorite to win TUF23, and he looked poised for a Roy Nelson-like run when he won is way into the house by disintegrating his opponent's entire sternum with a single soccer kick.

The fun ended there, though, as he unceremoniously lost to Cory Hendricks in his first fight in the season's tournament. He re-entered the competition due to an injury suffered by Hendricks, defeated teammate Josh Stansbury to get to the finals and then lost in ugly fashion to Andrew Sanchez to close out the season.

Rountree's strengths are obvious, but his weaknesses are evident as well at this point.

He has a great deal of potential despite those struggles, but if he loses to Pedro, there's no reason the UFC shouldn't boot him and wait to see how he shakes out on the regional circuit.

Is This the End of TUF: China?

2 of 5

The Fight:  Marlon Vera vs. Ning Guangyou, Yao Zhikui vs. Jenel Lausa
The Real Fight: Chinese Fighters vs. Less-Than-Ideal MMA Foundations

The Stakes

The Ultimate Fighter: China generated a few of the worst competitors to ever set foot inside the Octagon. With a new ownership group that seems to be moving away from international expansion, it's easy to wonder if "foothold" fighters for foreign markets, like Ning Guangyou and Yao Zhikui, will soon hit the unemployment lines.

The Question

Is this the end of TUF: China?

Analysis

The UFC has never been afraid to experiment, but one of the biggest failures it has had to date was TUF: China. From beginning to end to aftermath, the show was a comedy of errors that included the following gaffes:

  • One of the coaches, Hailin Ao, was fired from the show for not knowing how to fight.
  • The other coach, Tiequan Zhang, seemingly retired after filming concluded.
  • The infamous, completely inexperienced "yoga instructor" made it all the way into the televised competition.
  • Cung Le, who served as the season's head of the house, mentor and head coach, had a drug test flagged following his fight in Macau after the show.
  • Le was suspended for nine months, which was lengthened by three months, in a move that felt like punishment for Le's challenge of the results.
  • The suspension was lifted because, basically, there was no evidence suggesting he had used performance-enhancing drugs.
  • Le hasn't competed since and is involved in a class action lawsuit against the UFC.
  • The sole interesting prospect on the show, Wang Sai, stopped competing in the UFC under mysterious circumstances after a win over Danny Mitchell at UFC Fight Night 48. He is 7-1 since then.

Everyone involved with the show, from the top down, is gone at this point, except Zhikui and Guangyou. If they lose, this dark chapter in UFC history may finally come to a close.

Is This the End for Seohee Ham?

3 of 5

The Fight: Seohee Ham vs. Danielle Taylor
The Real Fight: Seohee Ham vs. Being Too Small for Her Division

The Stakes

Seohee Ham entered the UFC as a top-five competitor at 105 pounds. Unfortunately, she has been fighting at 115 pounds ever since. Going 1-2 in her last three, she's likely to receive a pink slip if she can't pull off a win here opposite the unknown Danielle Taylor.

The Question

Is this the end for Seohee Ham?

Analysis

From a technical standpoint, Ham is one of the best women in the UFC's strawweight division. Her striking is crisp, her footwork is good, and her fight IQ is well above-average.

The problem? She's so dang small.

Even next to 115-pound women, Ham looks undersized (see above), and unfortunately, her stature has been a factor in each of her UFC fights thus far. She frequently finds herself being muscled around the cage against her will and lacks the punching power to turn the tide once she starts falling behind.

In all likelihood, Ham is a better pound-for-pound fighter than Taylor. But size matters in MMA, and if Ham continues to demonstrate that, her days in the UFC are numbered.

What Will We See from Jake Matthews?

4 of 5

The Fight: Jake Matthews vs. Andrew Holbrook
The Real Fight: Jake Matthews vs. Historical Precedents

The Stakes

Jake Matthews is the first legitimate MMA prospect out of Australia in a while, but he's coming off a tough loss to Kevin Lee. He gets a manageable rebound opponent in Andrew Holbrook on his home soil, but the TUF alum has a lot on the line.

The Question

What will we see from Jake Matthews?

Analysis

A six-fight UFC veteran at just 22 years old, Matthews has shown enough for viewers to be interested in his long-term prospects. While he owns a fairly pedestrian record through those fights (4-2), he has a nose for stoppages and has beaten a handful of solid foes inside the distance.

Grooming prospects, unfortunately, isn't the UFC's strong suit, and that is rearing its head here.

Holbrook isn't a pushover, and Matthews is in for a tough test at Fight Night 101. The Australian has the tools to take the win, but he'll need to stay frosty. If he can't, it will be a serious blow to his career.

Who Will Muddy Up the Middleweight Title Picture?

5 of 5

The Fight: Robert Whittaker vs. Derek Brunson
The Real Fight: Robert Whittaker vs. Derek Brunson with Contendership at Stake

The Stakes

Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson are both on impressive runs that have gone largely unnoticed due to the drama surrounding the middleweight title picture. They have the opportunity to change that at Fight Night 101 when they face off in the main event.

The Question

Who will muddy up the middleweight title picture?

Analysis

Theoretically, Yoel Romero is the top contender at 185 pounds. In reality? It's much more complicated than that.

A combination of injuries, inactivity, poorly timed losses, narrow decisions, probable retirements and a controversial drug test have left four different men with strong claims to a title shot. Unfortunately, when four men have a strong claim to a title shot, really zero men do.

It's a crowded field, but Whittaker and Brunson are both just outside that lot. They're both exceptional talents who are on five-fight winning streaks, but only one of them will take that next step and angle for a title shot in 2017.

This is a high-stakes fight; the winner moves close to a title shot, while the loser lands far, far away from one.
