Jaron Brown, Cardinals Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Adam WellsNov 16, 2016

The Arizona Cardinals are committing to injured wide receiver Jaron Brown, signing him to a new deal through 2017.

Per Kent Somers of AZCentral Sports, Brown signed a new one-year contract extension with the Cardinals. ESPN's Josh Weinfuss confirmed the deal.

Brown's 2016 season ended during the Cardinals' 6-6 tie against the Seattle Seahawks on October 23 when he tore his ACL.

It was particularly poor timing for Brown, who was in the midst of a breakout season. The 26-year-old tied his career high with two starts in seven games and was averaging a career-best 17 yards per reception.

The Cardinals have done a good job this season of incorporating all of their playmakers into the offense. Eric Eager of Pro Football Focus noted after the team's Week 5 game against the San Francisco 49ers that Brown was one of four wide receivers to play more than 20 snaps.

The results haven't been there this year for the 4-4-1 Cardinals due in large part to quarterback Carson Palmer's regression after an MVP-caliber effort in 2015.

Even though Brown is injured for the rest of this season, he's been with the Cardinals for four years, and the coaching staff knows what he's capable of doing when healthy.

It's a short-term extension that buys Brown some security and gives the Cardinals some flexibility because Michael Floyd is due to become a free agent after the season.
