Monday Recap
Taylor suffered the indignity of a rare whitewash at the Grand Slam of Darts, but his loss to Webster had little effect on his qualification ambitions.
The Power took his place in the next round, with four points from his three matches.
The multiple world champion gave up his opening throw on three occasions in a row as his opponent put his foot down on the accelerator.
PDC Darts highlighted the win for the Demolition Man:
Taylor simply could not finish on a double as he attempted to find rhythm, but Webster was ruthless at the oche as the veteran struggled with his form.
According to the PDC, Taylor missed seven chances on a double, allowing his opponent time and space to prevail. His three-dart average was down at 87.08, giving him only a slim chance of a win.
The victory was a hollow one, though, as Webster crashed out at the group stage.
The winner on the night explained his resilience against the legend to the PDC:
Van Gerwen wasn't at his best on Monday night against Hopp, down on his usually exceptional averages, but Mighty Mike did more than enough to grab the victory.
The Dutchman raced to a 3-0 lead before he met any resistance, and his opponent was sufficiently deflated in the heat of battle.
Van Gerwen remained cool and calm during the match, and the longer form of the latter rounds will suit his high-paced style better than the shorter group-stage games.

Martin Adams crashed out of the tournament after he collapsed to a 5-3 defeat to Brendan Dolan. Wolfie appeared in command as he took a 3-2 lead in the match, but Dolan flexed his muscles to surge ahead and claim a spot in the last 16.
According to the PDC, Dolan failed to make a maximum during the match, but he was superior as the game developed into its final moments, despite only posting a three-dart average of 80.87.
Taylor was out of sorts on Monday night, but he was safe in the knowledge he would do no damage to his title hopes despite the loss. The Power looked jaded during the contest, and his pride will have been damaged by a 5-0 thumping at the hands of a lesser opponent.
Like Taylor, Van Gerwen was nowhere near his best in his match, but he remained solid rather than spectacular in his stance and hauled himself over the finish line in one of his less spectacular nights.
