7 Fantasy Pairings That Would Make Perfect WWE Tag Teams
One of the reasons so many fans have a special place in their hearts for tag team wrestling is because they get to see two of their favorite Superstars team up every so often.
Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage forming The Mega Powers was one of the coolest storylines of the late '80s, and that's just one example of how putting two people together can help both of their careers.
The Rock and Mick Foley, Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels and even Hulk Hogan and Edge were the kind of partnerships fans never expected to see but succeeded because of how much the fans loved those Superstars.
The other great thing about tag team wrestling is how it can revitalize the career of someone who has been in a slump or give a newer Superstar a boost.
This slideshow will look at seven sets of wrestlers who would make great teams for different reasons. The entries are not rankings, so don't worry about their order of appearance.
Tony Nese and Neville
1 of 7Neville seems like he can legitimately defy gravity with some of the things he can do in the ring, but for some reason, he has struggled since moving from NXT to the main roster.
Sometimes a talented Superstar can find new life as a member of a tag team, and if there is one person on the roster who would make the perfect partner for him, it's Tony Nese.
It's almost like these two were cast from the same mold. They are both more muscular than the average high-flyer and have both demonstrated their ability to perform moves nobody else in the company can do.
Just imagine the kind of matches Nese and Neville could have with the likes of American Alpha or The Revival when WWE eventually calls them up. They would steal the show every time.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens
2 of 7Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens have only been with the company for a few years but already have one of the most personal and established rivalries on the main roster.
Fan have been told about their long friendship many times during their feud, and it has given both men more depth than storylines with random Superstars could have done in twice the airtime.
WWE has a history of taking people with this kind of relationship and having them settle their differences by forming a tag team.
Rival team-ups have worked with The Rock 'n Sock Connection, The Two-Man Power Trip and The Brothers of Destruction. Thanks to a well-established relationship going back over a decade, the same formula could work for Zayn and Owens.
John Cena and Randy Orton
3 of 7Few Superstars on the roster have as much history between them as John Cena and Randy Orton.
You would be hard-pressed to find a stipulation these two have not utilized in a match, but it's a little surprising that WWE has only teamed them up a handful of times over the years.
Who could forget the night they faced the entire Raw roster together? They were bitter rivals at the time, but their chemistry as opponents allowed them to work well as partners.
WWE has tried almost everything to get Cena back to the level of popularity he had when he first won the WWE Championship, but it has never tried to put him in a serious tag team.
Orton has been over with the crowd for years, even during his heel runs, so he could be just what Cena needs to boost his popularity with the people who boo him every week.
This pairing would help both men, but more importantly, it would give the entire tag team division a boost. Whenever two main event players form a tag team, it brings more attention to everybody they face.
Apollo Crews and Jack Swagger
4 of 7If you think about all the talented wrestlers who aren't reaching their fullest potential, Jack Swagger and Apollo Crews are near the top of the list.
Swagger hasn't had a good run since his partnership with Zeb Colter ended, and Crews was called up before he was given a real push in NXT.
Both are on the SmackDown roster and working as babyfaces, so finding a reason for them to align would be easy for the creative team.
They are both powerful in their own right, but their repertoires are different enough to make for an interesting combination. Swagger's technical ability and Crews' agility would complement each other well.
Bo Dallas and Bray Wyatt
5 of 7Most WWE fans know that Bo Dallas and Bray Wyatt are brothers in real life, but the company has never taken advantage of their connection for a storyline.
Dallas had a great run in NXT, even defeating Big E for the NXT Championship and carrying it for 280 days, but has struggled to find his footing on the main roster.
His original character of a quasi-motivational speaker didn't work, and he has yet to go through a major transformation to shake the gimmick.
Wyatt has his own troubles with being used properly, but the two of them could help each other and make a formidable tag team in the process.
Wyatt could approach Dallas and reveal their family connection to the world while saying he is disappointed his brother has never reached his potential on his own. Dallas would be allowed to explore the darker aspects of his character, while Wyatt could finally be put into the hunt for a title in the tag team division.
Big Show and Curtis Axel
6 of 7If you are thinking these two have nothing in common, you are wrong. The thing they have in common is Curtis Axel's father, Curt Hennig.
As one of the few active wrestlers in WWE who actually wrestled Hennig, Big Show could be what Axel needs to reconnect to his roots.
Recently, WWE had Axel deliver a passionate promo talking about carrying on the legacy of his father and grandfather, but there was no followup.
Setting up this pairing would be easy. Axel could be sitting backstage moping when Big Show walks up and talks to him about his father and how he would be proud to see Axel in the ring.
This could be what brings them together and puts them on a path to facing the tag team champions. It would give a struggling Superstar a way to find his groove and an aging veteran another shot at being a champion.
WWE loves odd-couple pairings for the tag team division, and these two fit the powerhouse-and-technician mold established by teams like The Hart Foundation and Shawn Michaels and Diesel. It's a formula that works.
Finn Balor and AJ Styles
7 of 7AJ Styles and Finn Balor were both prominent members of New Japan Pro Wrestling's Bullet Club stable but never served together.
Balor's final NJPW appearance was at Invasion Attack 2014 in a match against Ryusuke Taguchi. This just happened to be the same night Styles debuted as the newest member of the popular stable.
Putting these two together would not only satisfy all the hardcore fans out there but would also combine two of the most talented performers on the roster.
Being on different shows is irrelevant because WWE can move people around on a whim. This is one of those dream teams WWE can use to bring attention to the tag titles if the division gets into a slump like it did a few years ago.
These seven combinations would all make good tag teams for different reasons, but everyone has a favorite dream team. Who would you like to see partner up?
