Pacquiao vs. Vargas Highlights: Recap, Results and Analysis of Complete Fight

Steve SilvermanNov 5, 2016

Manny Pacquiao is back in a familiar position after defeating Jessie Vargas by a unanimous decision Saturday night in Las Vegas.

He is once again a world champion. Pacquiao took Vargas's WBO welterweight title with a convincing victory but one that had a bit of unusual scoring.

Pacquiao seemed to dominate the fight with his quickness and effective punching. Two of the judges gave him 118-109 edges on the scorecards, but judge Dave Moretti gave him just a 114-113 edge.

Pacquiao started to put his signature on the bout in the second round. He delivered a straight left hand that knocked Vargas down. While the 27-year-old got up quickly and did not appear to be hurt, it was clear that he was surprised by the quickness of the punch and its overall effectiveness.

The Filipino legend, of course, is known for being a busy fighter who can dictate the pace. After the two were cautious in the first round, Pacquiao became the aggressor. That seemed to be fine with Vargas, who was more interested in counterpunching.

But it was clear that the strategy was working much more effectively for Pacquiao, and in the middle rounds Vargas altered his game plan. He started throwing some straight right hands and those punches were effective.

Pacquiao was still winning the majority of the rounds, but once Vargas started to punch more aggressively, the rounds were more action-oriented and closer.

Vargas appeared to get the best of it in the sixth, and Pacquiao got the message. He started throwing more punches in the seventh, and he retained his edge in the rounds that followed.

Vargas went down in both the 11th and 12th rounds from what appeared to be effective punches, but both of those were ruled slips.

Pacquiao had officially retired in April after his victory over Timothy Bradley, but he did not stick with his decision for a significant period. Based on the way he boxed Vargas, a fighter 10 years younger than himself, he still appears to be an effective fighter.

Based on his initial remarks after the contest, Pacquiao wants to continue. He told ESPN Boxing that he wants to take on "whoever the people wants [me] to fight."

Prior to the bout, retired champion Floyd Mayweather showed up. Since Pacquiao and Mayweather have already fought, speculation followed that the two would meet again.

However, the American told ESPN.com's Dan Rafael that he was just there to take his daughter to the fight.

While such a rematch seems unlikely because Mayweather has not indicated he wants to return to the sport, it appears that Pacquiao has enough left in the tank to continue for a little while.
