10 Recent Times Sports Social Media Was Hilariously Clever
The Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians gave sports fans perhaps the greatest baseball game they will ever see on rainy night in early November. They were the two best teams for much of the season, and theirs was a World Series that will live in the annals of baseball history.
Not only were they the best two teams in baseball, but their respective social media accounts also lived up to the high standards set by the on-field product. Mike Oz of Big League Stew compiled a list of killer tweets from both teams in a piece titled "Cubs vs. Indians is also the World Series of Twitter." Indeed.
And now, not only can Cubs fans bask in World Series glory, but they can feel good knowing their social media team is hilariously clever. It's a secondary victory, to be sure, but still something to be proud of. Here are a few other times sports social media was hella witty lately.
Cubs Halloween Costumes
The Cubs came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series in seven games. The scenario is all too familiar to folks in Cleveland—after all, their Cavaliers achieved the same feat against the Golden State Warriors in June. So, on Halloween, as the Cubs' official Twitter pondered Halloween costumes, it was only fitting they posted this tweet:
Indians Torch Bautista
Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista made a big mistake with a couple of comments he made during the American League Championship Series against the Indians. Namely, about Indians Game 5 starter, rookie Ryan Merritt, he said, "With our experience in our lineup, I'm pretty sure he's going to be shaking in his boots more than we are," per ESPN.com. (Spoiler: Merritt pitched well, and the Indians won.)
The Indians players and official team Twitter took it to him:
Bautista also made a comment about the "circumstances" of Games 1 and 2, an apparent implication the umpiring was biased toward Cleveland, per Andrew Marchand of ESPN.com. And again:
For good measure, this one was also pretty clever:
Football Ties in England
The Washington vs. Cincinnati Bengals NFL game in London ended in a tie, 27-27. It was the second tie of the 2016 season, and it inspired some pretty funny (if not slightly predictable) social media comparisons to world football:
Embiid and Simmons Get Political
Election day is coming up on November 8, folks (remember to vote!), and in that spirit, behold a conversation between Philadelphia 76ers teammates Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons re: Republican nominee Donald Trump:
Simmons was born in Australia and has citizenship there and in the U.S.
NFL Teams vs. GIF Ban
In early October, ESPN's Darren Rovell reported on new NFL rules that prohibit teams from posting live highlights, including GIFs, on social media during games. Several teams came up with some pretty hilarious workarounds:
Justin Forsett's Job Hunt
In other NFL news, the Baltimore Ravens released running back Justin Forsett in early October. He promptly took to social media to look for work:
(Which he found with the Detroit Lions, btw. Unclear if the tweet helped.)
Dan Haren Does It Again
Much of the sports world found out former MLB pitcher Dan Haren was hilarious on Twitter in January, when he posted a series of tweets recalling his time in the big leagues. To the delight of everyone with a sense of humor, Haren was at it again during World Series, lauding Cleveland ace Corey Kluber:
Hockey Players on Auston Matthews' Debut
Toronto Maple Leafs rookie phenom Auston Matthews scored a record-setting four goals in his NHL debut. Four! His hockey comrades took notice and weighed in with delightful wit:
Aston Villa's Managerial Carousel
Aston Villa—a club that was relegated to England's second tier in April—sacked manager Roberto Di Matteo in early October after just 124 days on the job. BBC Sport pointed out, "Villa are now looking for their fifth boss inside a year after deciding to replace the Italian, who won just one of 11 Championship games in charge."
Virgin Trains provided this clever troll job on Twitter:
Things got a little salty after that, but who doesn't like a good Twitter battle?
Doctor's Notes for Kyle Schwarber
How about one more World Series tweet for the road, eh? One of the many great Cubs storylines was that of outfielder/catcher Kyle Schwarber, who saw his regular season end just three games in with a knee injury and rehabbed his way back into the starting lineup for the World Series.
Schwarber was only medically cleared to hit, however. Cubs fans took to social media to express their desire to see him in the field:
Keep it up, sports social media. You da best.
