Chelsea Transfer News: John Terry, Guangzhou Evergrande 'Mega Deal' Rumours

Rory MarsdenNov 3, 2016

Chelsea captain John Terry could reportedly be offered a "mega deal" in excess of £8 million per season to move to Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande for next term.

According to the Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel, Terry, 35, has been a long-term target for Guangzhou, and they are prepared to offer him big money to move to the Far East.

Per Mokbel, the Englishman is currently an ambassador for the Chinese club—managed by former Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari—a connection Guangzhou are hoping to use to their advantage.

Terry's current contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the 2016-17 season after he was belatedly offered a new one-year deal to remain at Stamford Bridge in May, ending speculation that he might have left in the summer, per Ed Aarons in the Guardian.

The centre-back's 18-year senior playing career at Stamford Bridge is nearing its end, though, and Terry could well be in his last campaign with the Blues.

David Luiz was added to the centre-back ranks in the summer, and the Brazilian and Gary Cahill have recently been manager Antonio Conte's first choice in a back-three system with Cesar Azpilicueta.

The newly installed 3-4-3 formation does not favour Terry, per MailOnline's Matt Barlow.

Meanwhile, the currently injured Kurt Zouma, 22, is seen by many as a future Chelsea stalwart in the defence, and the club have been heavily linked to a number of new defenders, particularly JuventusLeonardo Bonucci, per Matt Law in the Telegraph.

The 29-year-old Italian would be a phenomenal addition to the Blues squad:

A Terry departure from Stamford Bridge in the summer would be little surprise as he now belongs very much in Chelsea's past rather than their future.

Before picking up an injury, he started Chelsea's first four Premier League games in the 2016-17 campaign under Conte.

However, the Italian manager now has his preferred system, and Terry does not fit into it.

Per Mokbel, Terry could be offered a new 12-month deal to stay on for another season later in the campaign, but it will likely depend on how much first-team action he gets.

In all likelihood, and especially with Conte preparing to add defensive reinforcements, Terry will no longer be needed for next season and a swansong in China with Guangzhou would surely be an attractive next step for the Blues legend.
