Danny Ings Injury: Liverpool Striker Injures Knee, Reportedly out for the Season

Rory MarsdenNov 2, 2016

Liverpool's Danny Ings will reportedly be out for the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury.

It is another big setback to his career after he missed most of the 2015-16 campaign with a cruciate ligament problem.

The Daily Mail's Dominic King reported the blow for the 24-year-old forward:

Per the Telegraph's Chris Bascombe, Ings is undergoing surgery after he suffered the knee problem during Liverpool's recent EFL Cup win against Tottenham Hotspur.

On Liverpool's official website it was explained Ings will miss between seven and nine months of action, while Reds manager Jurgen Klopp made clear his disappointment at the news:

"

To say we are gutted would be an understatement; he is such a great boy and has worked so hard that he deserves better luck than this.

It is typical of Danny's personality, on and off the pitch, that he picked up this injury to his knee when courageously trying to win the ball back for his team by making a tackle.

But it is this same personality that means he will come back as good and as strong from this latest setback as he has done in the past.

I'm told the likely lay off is anywhere from between seven to nine months. He is mentally strong, physically strong and will have the very best treatment and rehab possible to make sure when he returns he is ready to play for us at the level we know he is capable of.

"

Formerly a Burnley player, Ings' run-out against Spurs was part of his ongoing attempts to reach full match fitness once again having missed so much of last season.

Per the Liverpool Echo's Kristian Walsh, he looked good during Liverpool's 2-1 win against the north London outfit after replacing Divock Origi in the 68th minute:

It was only Ings' second appearance of the season following his showing from the bench in September's 3-0 EFL Cup win over Derby County.

Given the quality of Klopp's attacking line, even a fully fit Ings would be unlikely to earn a consistent starting berth in the Premier League ahead of the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.

However, the Englishman could have provided very useful cover during the campaign as he can play both as an out-and-out striker or in a slightly withdrawn role, while he has proved to be an effective Premier League goalscorer in the past—he netted 11 times for Burnley in the 2014-15 season.

Following Ings' latest injury, though, Klopp will have to rely on the likes of Origi and Daniel Sturridge for attacking cover in 2016-17.
