Jose Mourinho Receives Fine, Touchline Ban: Latest Details, Reaction

Rory MarsdenNov 2, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been handed a one-match touchline ban after being sent to the stands during the Red Devils' 0-0 Premier League draw against Burnley at Old Trafford.

The Football Association provided confirmation of the Portuguese's punishment, clarifying he has been handed an additional fine of £50,000 for comments he made prior to the match against Liverpool:

"

An Independent Regulatory Commission heard that Mourinho accepted the comments he made on 14 October 2016 constituted improper conduct but denied they brought the game into disrepute, in contravention of Rule E3(1).

The Commission found the disrepute element of the charge proven and as well as being fined, Mourinho was warned as to his future conduct.

Separate to this, Mourinho will serve an immediate one-match touchline ban after he admitted using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official and accepted the standard penalty.

Mourinho was sent off at half-time during the Burnley clash after making complaints about a penalty appeal turned down by referee Mark Clattenburg late in the opening half.

Per BBC Sport, he initially sat in the stands near the pitch before being asked to move to the directors' box.

It was the former Chelsea manager's second disciplinary discretion in a matter of weeks after he was charged by the FA for comments made about referee Anthony Taylor ahead of October's clash with Liverpool at Anfield. He received no ban for that indiscretion.

Per Neil Custis in the Sun, the automatic sanction for being sent off is a one-match touchline ban and £8,000 fine. Mourinho was handed the same punishment, despite his history of touchline antics.

Last season he picked up a £50,000 fine and a suspended one-match stadium ban after he accused officials of being "afraid to give decisions for Chelsea," per Sky Sports.

The suspended ban expired on October 13, 2016, the day before his comments about Taylor were published ahead of the Liverpool match, per David Anderson in the Mirror.

It is hardly an ideal time for Mourinho to pick up a ban given his United side continue to struggle.

Since succeeding Louis van Gaal as Red Devils boss in the summer, Mourinho has endured more lows than highs at Old Trafford.

The draw to Burnley was United's fourth league game on the bounce without a win, and they currently sit eight points back from league leaders Manchester City.
