This marathon is one of the nation's largest and most popular marathons and one of the largest marathons that doesn't offer a prize money for the finishers. However, the event provides an opportunity for members of the Marine Corps to come together and celebrate a special day for the armed services.
The Marine Corps Marathon isn't just for runners, however, as hand cyclists were able to participate, including Arkadiusz Skrzypinski, 41, from New York City, who finished in first place this year.
Celebration, athletic achievement and recognition of the work done by the men and women of the Marine Corps and armed services is what this event is all about. Kosgei and Shoemaker may have finished in first place in their respective divisions, but all participants were winners on Sunday.
