WWE Hell in a Cell 2016: Match Card, Potential Spoilers, Predictions and More

Ryan DilbertOct 28, 2016

Three times warriors will enter The Devil's Playground at WWE Hell in a Cell 2016, and each journey will be vastly different.

Roman Reigns vs. Rusev for the United States Championship is the least hyped match of the trio. It also features the least suspense. Few people, other than Mama Rusev, believe The Bulgarian Brute will claim victory at Sunday's Raw-exclusive pay-per-view.

It will be up to the two bruisers to deliver brutality and intensity to make up for an uneven feud.

When Kevin Owens defends his Universal Championship against Seth Rollins, the story promises to be convoluted. The champion's best friend and the man who handed him the title in the first place promise to play a major role in that tale.

And for Sasha Banks and Charlotte, their Raw Women's Championship match inside Hell in a Cell has through-the-roof expectations.

As the first women to clash in the structure, they will be representing an entire division and gender.

Banks and Charlotte are sure to take that as a challenge. To make their mark on the PPV and WWE history, The Boss and The Queen are sure to take a daredevil approach to their championship tilt.

Potential Spoilers

All signs point to Banks and Charlotte pushing the pedal all the way down to the floor on Sunday.

Ric Flair talked to Justin Barrasso in a recent Sports Illustrated Extra Mustard interview about daughter Charlotte's intentions for the bout, saying: "She isn't afraid of anything, and she's going to go out and make a statement again—and there is no talking her out of it. You didn't see me do any moonsaults off the top of a cage, but she has something really special in mind for the cage."

A moonsault off Hell in a Cell would be insane, but it's not hard to imagine Charlotte pitching that idea, wanting to create a moment of a lifetime. She and Banks have a history of putting themselves at risk for the sake of bolstering a match.

Their collision may not go on last as many have expected, though.

Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Sean Rueter of Cageside Seats), WWE owner Vince McMahon is opposed to Banks vs. Charlotte headlining the event. Apparently, Triple H and WWE Creative are all in on the idea while McMahon has pushed back against it.

That's likely why WWE has started to refer to the three Hell in a Cell bouts as comprising a "triple main event."

The Unlikeliest of Champions

The Usos, The League of Nations and The Club have been unable to dethrone The New Day. The champs have held on to the belts for over 430 days, per WWE.com.

But all reigns must end.

The reluctant pairing of Cesaro and Sheamus will surprise the champions and the audience with a title win on Sunday. The most intriguing story here is that two men who hate each other somehow topple an extremely cohesive unit.

It's a tactic WWE has gone to in the past, from Dude Love and Steve Austin to Team Hell No.

As for The New Day, it's time to shake things up with the trio somehow. A loss puts them in the title hunt again, changing their dynamic of their narrative. Dropping the belts could also cause Big E and his brothers-in-arms to turn the volume knob up on their intensity.

Reigns Rolls on

It's too early to take the U.S. title away from Reigns. He only outlasted Rusev to take home that prize in September.

Bleacher Report's Matt Camp noted he believes the feud will end here with a Reigns victory:

That result is one of the safest bets of the night. WWE doesn't dole out loses to Reigns often, and this would be an odd time to do so.

The bigger question is whether we will see some shifting in either man's character. Fans have long speculated that Reigns will turn heel. Rusev is looking more and more like a babyface in the making.

A double turn here would be a smart move.

Chaos in the Cell

WWE Creative will have its fingerprints all over this one. Expect an overbooked, crowded contest with plenty of moving parts.

Owens' best friend, Chris Jericho, is sure to assist him. But their recent tension could bubble over too. And former Rollins mentor Triple H looms in this storyline.

Dave Scherer of PWInsider.com wrote, "I wouldn't be shocked to see HHH appear and get involved at the finish."

After The Game betrayed Rollins and gifted Owens the universal title in August, he has been nowhere to be seen. Triple H hasn't yet explained his actions that night, and that part of the tale hasn't been explored nearly enough.

That will end at some point soon as Rollins moves on from Owens to take on Triple H. Owens, meanwhile, is liable to collide with Jericho.

The Boss and The Queen Enter Hell

Banks and Charlotte will deliver an instant classic whether WWE decides to put them in the main event or not. Their rivalry is Raw's most compelling, and the two women have stellar chemistry together.

Add the historic nature of this bout, and there is sure to be a special feeling in the air.

Banks will outlast her longtime rival. There have been too many title changes in the past few months to pull off another one here. The Boss will hold tight to her crown until WrestleMania.

Each woman is poised to move on to a new rivalry after this one. If they don't break each other on Sunday, that is.

Dangerous spots are on their way. And this will be the most violent women's match in WWE history. Rest assured that Banks and Charlotte will do everything and anything to make sure people remember the first women's Hell in a Cell clash.
