Liverpool vs. Tottenham: Jurgen Klopp's Key Pre-Match Presser Quotes for EFL Cup

Rory MarsdenOct 24, 2016

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that summer signing Loris Karius is now his No. 1 goalkeeper, but Simon Mignolet will start Tuesday's EFL Cup fourth-round clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Karius, 23, moved to Anfield from Mainz in May for £4.7 million to provide error-prone Mignolet with competition, despite the Belgian having signed a contract extension to 2021 in January.

The pair have shared starting duties so far in 2016-17 as Karius spent time on the sidelines with a hand injury, but Klopp has now made it clear the German is his No. 1 stopper, per the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:

"

It's what I call a luxury problem (with the keepers). Simon wasn't happy with the situation but you can't see that in training.

In this moment we have a No. 1 and that's Loris Karius. That's the situation. I cannot leave them in doubt.

After the last international break I spoke to both of them and we made this decision. That's the ranking. Loris No. 1, Simon No. 2.

"

Clearly there is scope, though, for Mignolet, 28, to win back his spot as first-choice goalkeeper, and Klopp confirmed he will be given a run out against Spurs at Anfield on Tuesday, per Pearce:

Karius has started each of Liverpool's last four matches in the Premier League, from which they have gained 10 points—they only dropped points in last week's 0-0 home draw with Manchester United.

Indeed, the Reds have gone unbeaten for the last nine matches in all competitions, but they face a tricky challenge against Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham side on Tuesday—the north London outfit are on their own eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Klopp insisted that his side have still yet to reach their best, though, per Pearce:

Despite the EFL Cup being England's second-tier knockout competition, and likely third-ranked in importance for the Reds—behind the Premier League and FA Cup—the German manager wants his side to win the tournament.

Klopp oversaw Liverpool's loss to Manchester City on penalties in the final of last season's campaign, and he is eager that his side go one better in 2016-17, per Kristian Walsh in the Mirror:

"

We decided after the game against City (in the final) that we should try again.

It would be a negative sign if we need to lose a final to feel that. It’s an interesting tournament, a big cup, that’s why we want to win it.

I didn’t know anything about the final before. When I was there, it’s a real final, a real experience.

"

Per ESPN FC's Ben Dinnery, Klopp confirmed that Mignolet will not be the only change to the side that beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Saturday:

The home advantage should be beneficial to Liverpool as they look to make it past the EFL Cup fourth round, as they have not lost at Anfield since January.

However, Spurs have the quality to cause the Reds problems, even if Pochettino rests some of his key players as well.
