Mickie James, Goldberg Returns and Top WWE News from Week of October 15

The Doctor Chris MuellerOct 15, 2016

It's been a busy week for both current and former WWE Superstars. Not only did we learn about Goldberg making his first WWE appearance in 13 years, but we also found out a former WWE women's champion would be returning for a shot at the NXT Women's Championship.

Let's take a look at the biggest stories from the past week.

Goldberg Confirmed for 2 More Raw Appearances

TOP NEWS

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

Goldberg will be appearing Monday to address Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman's challenge, but we now know he will appear at least two more times before Survivor Series.

The official Twitter accounts for the XL Center and the KeyBank Center sent out messages confirming appearances for Oct. 31 and Nov. 14, respectively.

This means Goldberg will be showing up on Raw every other week leading up to what many assume will be a match against Lesnar at Survivor Series.

Monday will be the first time Goldberg has stepped into a WWE ring in over 13 years. It will be interesting to see how the WWE Universe reacts to the former world champion.

Hideo Itami Injured Again

Hideo Itami spent over a year recovering from an injury before returning on Aug. 3, so the news of another injury for the Japanese Superstar is disheartening.

WWE.com revealed Itami will miss the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, in which he was supposed to team with Kota Ibushi.

However, it doesn't sound like this is as serious as his previous shoulder injury, as Itami promised he would be back for WWE's show in Osaka, Japan, on Dec. 3.

This is an unfortunate setback for a wrestler who likely would have been called up to the main roster by now had injury not forced him out of action, but he could still bounce back if he takes his recovery seriously.

Mickie James Returning

In a bit of happier news from the land of NXT, Bobby Melok of WWE.com confirmed the return of former women's and Divas champion Mickie James.

James was last seen in a WWE ring on April 23, 2010, in a tag team match with Beth Phoenix against Layla and Michelle McCool, and she has made regular appearances in TNA, AAA and several other indy promotions over the past six-and-a-half years.

James will be taking on Asuka at NXT TakeOver: Toronto on Nov. 19 for the NXT Women's Championship. If she wins, it will make her the second woman to have held the NXT, WWE Women's and Divas Championships after Charlotte.

With Lita being a regular on the pre-show panels and Trish Stratus' yoga studio being right outside Toronto, we could see some kind of reunion with the women who carried the division during the Attitude Era.

Alberto Del Rio Named President of MMA Promotion

Alberto Del Rio may be gone from WWE, but he has already found another job to keep him busy between wrestling appearances.

According to Brian Campbell of ESPN.com, the former WWE champion has been named president of Combate Americas, an MMA promotion meant to appeal to Hispanic fighters and fans.

Del Rio is renowned in Mexico as one of the greatest technical wrestlers in the business, but he has also dabbled in MMA, putting together a record of 9-5 from 2001 to 2010.

While building Combate Americas will be his top priority, Del Rio will continue to make wrestling appearances until he decides it's time to hang up his boots for good.

CM Punk Done with UFC?

CM Punk's loss to Mickey Gall at UFC 203 wasn't exactly the way he hoped his big MMA debut would go, and judging from recent comments from the promotion's president, Dana White, his first UFC event may also have been his last.

White had the following to say during an interview with UFC Tonight on Fox Sports 1 (h/t Mike Johnson of PWInsider): "Is CM Punk going to be a guy who is going to stay in the UFC and continue to fight? Probably not, but he wanted to try it. I like the guy. I respect the guy. He wanted to fight in the UFC. He wanted to do it. He trained for two years, and he did it."

Punk stated his desire to continue pursuing a career in MMA during his post-fight press conference, but he might have to look for another promotion to represent.

Companies such as Bellator and Combate Americas would probably love to add his name to a marquee event because of the publicity his participation would bring.

Do you think CM Punk has a future in MMA? What is your opinion on the returns of Goldberg and James? Can Itami stay healthy long enough to be called up to the main roster?
