Caulfield Cup Odds: Jameka Betting Favorite over Real Love, Articus, Scottish
Jameka is set to go into Saturday's $3 million Caulfield Cup, Australia's second-richest handicap, as a clear favorite as she bids to become the first mare to win the race in five years.
The four-year-old, who won last year's Victorian Oaks, drew barrier 13, but despite a slightly wider-than-preferred alley in the 18-horse field is a $3.30 favorite according to website AustralianGambling.
Off her strong second in the recent Turnbull Stakes, she is set to be the shortest-priced favorite in the race since December Draw was unplaced as the $3.25 top pick in 2011.
On the second line of betting is another mare, Real Love, who is $8 after romping in the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley at her most recent start. Real Love drew barrier 10.
Southern Speed was the last mare to win the Caulfield Cup in 2011, and before that it was Ethereal in 2001 and Arctic Scent in 1996.
Scottish, owned by global breeding and racing giant Godolphin, is considered a main threat to the mares' domination of the race at $9. Scottish, hoping to give Godolphin their second win in the race, came out with barrier seven.
German galloper Articus, trained by Andres Wohler, who won the 2014 Melbourne Cup with Protectionist, is also at $9 after heavy support over recent days and comes out of barrier 11.
Aidan O'Brien, looking for his first win in the race, has Sir Isaac Newton at $15 after he drew barrier nine, while the other European in the race, Exospheric, who is now trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, came up with barrier three and is $11.
Godolphin's local hope, Tally, drifted to $13 after coming out with barrier 19.
Freedman's other chance, Our Ivanhowe, who came third in this race last year, also drew well in six but is well out of the market at $26, the same price as four-time Group 1 winner Preferment, who wears the No. 1 saddlecloth and comes out of barrier 15.
