Stephen Curry Confirms He Will Stand for National Anthem

Tyler ConwaySep 26, 2016

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry reiterated he would stand during the national anthem at Monday's media day session with reporters.

"I plan on standing," Curry said, per Sam Amick of USA Today.

During an interview at TechCrunch in San Francisco this month, Curry previously said he would "most likely" stand. The two-time reigning MVP was clear he supports the message of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick but was choosing not to express his message in the same way, per Anthony Slater of the Mercury News:

"

I’ll most likely stand. Colin, if you follow the way he talks, the message he’s trying to send with his act, he’s not, from his mouth, disrespecting the veterans or the military. That’s not his intention. He’s obviously continued the act to create the conversation for more social justice and things of that nature. I’ve been a part of certain conversations off the grid, finding different ways to make our community better, especially for African-Americans. That’s not the way I’ll do it. But I support him in his attempt to start the conversation or continue the conversation.

"

Kaepernick has sat or knelt during the anthem during every preseason and regular-season game in 2016 as a protest of racial inequality. The decision has become a source of national controversy, with some applauding Kaepernick's stand and others categorizing the protest as disrespectful.

Kaepernick's list of supporters has grown with each passing week across the NFL and other sports, with some choosing to kneel and others raising their firsts in solidarity. NBA players have not had a chance to offer their thoughts one way or another because they were in the offseason.

LeBron James said Monday he would also stand for the anthem, per Nick Schwartz of Fox Sports:

"

I'm all in favor of anyone—athlete or not an athlete—being able to express what they believe in in a peaceful manner, and that's exactly what Colin Kaepernick is doing, and I respect that. I think you guys know when I'm passionate about something I speak upon it.

Me standing for the national anthem is something I will do. That's who I am. That's what I believe in, but that doesn't mean I don't respect and don't agree with what Colin Kaepernick is doing. You have the right to voice your opinion, stand for your opinion—and he's doing it in the most peaceful way I've seen someone do something.

"

With arguably the league's two best players choosing to stand, it's unclear if that will set a precedent for NBA players, or if some will choose their own path.
