Philadelphia Eagles vs. Chicago Bears Betting Odds, Analysis, NFL Pick

OddsShark.comSep 14, 2016

Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz will be looking to build on his impressive NFL debut as he leads the Philadelphia Eagles into Chicago in Week 2 for a Monday night matchup with the Bears at Soldier Field.

Wentz impressed last weekend, throwing a pair of touchdown passes as the retooled Eagles laid a 29-10 beating on the Cleveland Browns as four-point home favorites, improving to 4-2 straight up in their past six games. The Bears are coming off a disappointing 23-14 Week 1 loss in Houston against the Texans as 4.5-point underdogs and will be searching for their first SU win in their past six home contests.

Point spread: The Bears opened as 1.5-point favorites; the total was 43 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark (line updates and matchup report).

Why the Eagles can cover the spread

Wentz looked confident in his debut, marching the Eagles 75 yards down the field for a game-opening touchdown. The 23-year-old found six different receivers on the day, carving up a Browns defense that ranked 27th a year ago.

Things get tougher against a Bears pass defense that ranked fourth in the league in 2015. However, Chicago failed to contain the Texans during their second-half comeback last weekend.

The Eagles defense received a lift by holding the Browns to just 288 total yards and 14 first downs, ending a stretch of seven games in which they had allowed over 400 total yards per game.

Why the Bears can cover the spread

With each successive home loss, the pressure builds on the Chicago Bears. The club has earned just one SU victory in its past 11 games at Soldier Field but has lost by four or fewer points in four of its past five defeats.

Quarterback Jay Cutler showed good chemistry with receivers Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White last week, but the offensive line will need to provide better protection after allowing Cutler to be sacked five times.

The Bears defensive line must also rise to the occasion against Wentz, who faced little resistance from a feeble Browns defense and will have to earn his yardage in Chicago.

Smart pick

The Eagles handed Chicago a 54-11 beating on the road the last time these teams met, three years ago. However, the Bears have dominated in recent head-to-head matchups, going 4-2 SU and against the spread in their past six meetings and 2-1 SU and ATS in their past three at Soldier Field.

The Bears must make a number of adjustments after last week's dismal second-half performance in which they earned just four first downs. That opportunity presents itself as the veteran Cutler leads Chicago against an unproven Eagles defense, which ranked 30th in the NFL a year ago.

Look for the Bears' home losing streak to end with a slim SU and ATS win this weekend.

Betting trends

The total has gone over in the Eagles' last three games against the Bears.

The Bears are 1-10 SU in their last 11 games at home.

The Eagles are 1-5 ATS in their last six games on the road after a win on the road.
