LaLiga outfit Valencia were second behind Liverpool, £8 million shy of the Reds' total sales. Liverpool's gross spend on players in the same period was £561 million, as the club's owner, Fenway Sports Group, made a significant investment in the squad.
The Reds were the sixth-biggest spenders in Europe's top five leagues, above Real Madrid and Juventus but trailing behind Premier League rivals Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United.
Lega Serie A shared the CIES rankings of the biggest spenders in Europe:
In other news, Liverpool are tracking River Plate forward Lucas Alario, as manager Jurgen Klopp searches for additional attacking options for his team.
Geoff Sweet of the Sun reported Liverpool will battle Tottenham Hotspur for the 23-year-old talent, who has impressed in Argentinian football. The Reds are believed to have offered £8.5 million for the player—who has a £15.2 million release clause—but Los Millonarios rejected the offer. Inter Milan and Torino are also in the hunt to lure the attacker to Europe.

Alario has previously spoken of his desire of moving to the continent, per Sweet: "Like every player, I dream to play in Europe at some point in my career. For that, first I have to make things right at River, to keep growing and learning."
Sweet also gave his own opinion of the attacker, who recently made his international debut for Argentina, writing:
"Alario could be quite a catch. He’s mobile, intelligent, good in the air and a classy finisher.
He can play on the last shoulder of his marker, as well as with his back to goal as a target man who links with others – the type of complete striker Reds manager Jurgen Klopp needs to make his high-energy pressing and combination passing click on a more consistent basis in the final third.
"
Here is the player in action for River:
Klopp needs to strengthen his striking options, but as promising as Alario is, the German needs to target a proven goalscorer with Premier League or top-level European experience.
Benteke was regarded as a powerful goalscorer who could add credibility to the forward line upon his arrival in 2015, but his departure in August left a gap in the Reds squad.
Daniel Sturridge is still trying to recapture his form after myriad injuries, and the German manager is having to rely on playmaker Roberto Firmino as a striker.
The balance is not right at Anfield, and despite having a number of strong attacking options from midfield, Klopp needs a primary centre-forward and a dominating centre-back.
