Manchester City Transfer News: Latest Ricardo Rodriguez and Fabinho Rumours

Tom SunderlandSep 10, 2016

Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez has given suitors Manchester City hope of signing him in the future after speaking hopefully of a move away from the Volkswagen Arena. However, the Citizens won't be landing Fabinho from AS Monaco anytime soon.

Rodriguez was linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium over the summer, but a move never materialised despite reports he could be had for €25 million (£21.1 million).

In an interview with Swiss newspaper Blick, Rodriguez spoke confidently of his own ability, insisting he is worth that figure and hinting he could make a big-money move in the future (h/t Joe Short of the Daily Express):

"

I guess it was just meant to be this way. God wanted it this way. You just need the right timing for a transfer and it's a fact that during this transfer window, there were hardly any transfers of players in my position.

I don't think €25m is too much for me.

I'm only 24 and I already have more than four years of experience as a regular in the Bundesliga and the national team, and over €40m (£33.8m) has been spent on players with less going for them.

To be honest, I don't think any footballer is worth so much, but these are the mechanics of professional football.

"

Those comments show the Switzerland international is by no means short on confidence, something he'd need in order to fit in with the already star-studded cast at City manager Pep Guardiola's disposal.

Rodriguez has already picked up in fine form this season, and Sky Sports' Alex Chaffer was quick to point out the danger he poses from set-piece situations, a strong advantage to possess in a defender:

Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy already patrol the left-back spot at the Etihad, but Rodriguez has proved himself to be an elite asset of his own and could challenge for a place in the squad.

The 24-year-old's words also suggested he's ready to move if a bigger club comes calling, but his main focus now will be improving Wolfsburg's fortunes and ensuring his future prospects are strong.

Meanwhile, Monaco have tied right-back Fabinho down to a new two-year contract extension on the French Riviera, meaning his chances of leaving the Ligue 1 outfit in the near future look slim.

Sky Sports' Michael Kelleher reported on the two-year extension, which will keep Fabinho at Monaco until 2021, and it's no wonder the club have decided to prolong his loyalties given recent form, per Squawka:

Metro's Simon Rice reported over the summer that Manchester City were one of the clubs examining a potential move for Fabinho, who spent a short period on loan at Real Madrid as a youth.

The Brazil international, 22, looks set to remain with Monaco for the time being, but with Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna both ageing, a new deal may not be enough to keep Guardiola's City at bay.
